The State Museum's most recent addition is located in Patterson, Louisiana. Established by the Legislature as the state's official aviation museum, Wedell-Williams is committed to preserving and presenting artifacts and documents reflecting aviation history in Louisiana. It is named for two famous Louisiana aviators - Jimmie Wedell and Harry Williams - who formed an air service in Patterson in the 1928. Both men became nationally prominent during what was known as the Golden Age of Aviation. Although both Wedell and Williams perished in plane crashes, their legacy lives on in the memorabilia and planes on display. The Museum's collection centers around memorabilia from the lives of aviators Jimmy Wedell and Harry Williams, including an airworthy replica of Wedell's "44" racer. A 1939 D175 Beechcraft or "Staggerwing" and a Presidential Aero-Commander 680, used during the Eisenhower administration, are also on display. Other items on exhibit include race trophies from the 1930s, the state's largest collection of model airplanes, and a vintage hot air balloon basket.

Corps Aviation
AcePilots Main Page WW2 Marine Aces ... In Association with Amazon.com While Pappy Boyington and his Black Sheep Squadron of World War Two are the most famous Marine Corps aviators, "Leatherneck" fliers have contributed to the operations of the Corps, from WWI to the present. The first USMC pilots, Alfred Cunningham and Roy Gieger, began in 1912. In the First World War, the Marine fliers demonstrated their versatility: flying anti-submarine patrols as well as front-line bombing missions. Between the wars, it was a struggle for survival, as tight budgets and isolationism limited funding. But during World War 2, Marine aviation grew exponentially, from 145 pilots in 1936 to over 10,000 by V-J Day. Aces like Gregory "Pappy" Boyington and Joe Foss won the headlines and medals, and deserve their prominence. But the dive bombers, torpedo bombers, and pilots flying ground attack displayed the same valor. In Korea and Vietnam, it was more of the same - close support for the grunts on the ground, whether in Panther jets, Douglas Skyraiders, or helicopters. The Corps' air mission continues today.

Most of the records are forgotten, like a non-stop flight in a single engine plane from Tokyo to Wenatchee, Washington. A few of those events are unforgettable. Citizens around the world, including young people just learning to read and write, joined in the triumph of Charles Lindbergh's 1927 solo non-stop flight from New York to Paris. That flight spanned two calendar days, leaving Roosevelt Field on Long Island in the early daylight of May 20, 1927 and landing in the early evening at Le Bourget Field, Paris on May 21, 1927. In differing sectors of the aviator spectrum in the 1920s were barnstormers, mail pilots, military pilots and very late in that decade, a few airline pilots. The diversity in human interests is reflected in the fact that pilots in these very different flying professions had almost all come to aviation as the result of the impetus given to aviation by World War I. Two flights, known now to almost no living persons, come frequently to the author's mind. One was recorded in two small-town newspapers. The other was recorded only in human memory. These occurred within two months, and within two years, respectively, after Lindbergh and his
