POINT SUR, California (AP) The U.S. Coast Guard called off its search Saturday for four U.S. Navy officers missing since their two fighter jets collided during a combat exercise Friday. The search ended at 6:30 p.m. because of sea and weather conditions, and because about 33 hours had passed since the pilots were reported missing, according to Coast Guard spokesman Matt Juillerat. The Navy identified the missing officers as Lt. Stephen R. Nevarez, 31, a weapons systems officer from New Orleans, Louisiana; Lt. Joel A. Korkowski, 30, a pilot from Phoenix, Arizona; Lt. Matthew S. Shubzda, 27, a pilot from Dallas, Texas; and Lt. Stephen N. Benson, 26, a weapons system officer from Virginia Beach, Virginia. The four were members of Strike Fighter Squadron 41, based at Lemoore Naval Air Station near Fresno, California. Two cutters, an HH-65 Dolphin helicopter and three commercial fishing vessels helped search the chilly waters of the Pacific

AcePilots Main Page World War One Pilots B etween the World Wars was most exciting period in aviation history. Almost daily, pilots were breaking speed and distance records, designers were revolutionizing aircraft design, and manufacturers were building more and better planes. Barnstormers, air shows, and flying circuses fascinated the public and drew large crowds. Oceans and continents were conquered. And at no small risk. Many brave fliers set out to fly long distances and simply disappeared, usually swallowed up without a trace in the oceans. The National Air Races in Cleveland were an institution. AcePilots Main Page WWI Aces They fought in canvas and wood biplanes that could barely fly 100 MPH. Men like von Richthofen, Rickenbacker, Bishop, Guynemer, Mannock, Ball, who flew airplanes with names like Spad, Fokker, Albatros, Nieuport, and Sopwith Camel. In this era, the top speeds were about 100 MPH. When the pilots ventured ten miles over the enemy lines, that was a notable event. The pilots carried no parachutes. The airplanes were made of wood and canvas; when they caught on fire, it spread quickly, and spelled certain death for the occupants. The press and public, desperate for heroes amongst the waste and destruction of the trenches, idolized the young heroes.

Lost aviators mourned in military ceremony
File photo of an F/A 18F Story Tools
LEMOORE, California (AP) Four Navy aviators presumed dead after their planes collided over the Pacific Ocean in a training exercise were mourned Wednesday in a private service at their air base. About 800 relatives, friends and troops packed the chapel at Lemoore Naval Air Station to bid farewell to the two pilots and two weapons operators who were flying in two F/A-18F Super Hornets that crashed Friday. The four aviators were participating in dogfighting exercises when the jets collided. Searchers recovered wreckage but no bodies. Four fellow members of the Black Aces squadron eulogized their fallen comrades at the service. A so-called missing man formation flew overhead, with one jet breaking away from the diamond shape and soaring toward the heavens. The fatalities were the first in a Super Hornet since the Navy began flying the new combat jet in 1999.

Posted to England in November 1916, he soloed after 55 minutes of dual instruction and received a pilot's certificate in January 1917. In November 1917, his squadron was reassigned to Italy where Barker's Sopwith Camel became the single most successful fighter aircraft of the war. Logging more than 379 hours of flight time, Barker shot down 46 enemy aircraft before Camel #B6313 was retired from service and dismantled on 2 October 1918. That month, he assumed command of the British air combat school at Hounslow and eventually returned to service in France.

The good news is that I've gone through 2 designs and ready to start showing PARTS of the planned site. The site is not fully functional, but will give you an idea of what it will look like and what I have planned for the navigation. If you would like to see what I've been working on, use the following link: http://www.crestviewmodelaviators.com/beta2/ Again I apologize for the delay. The plan is to have the site a little more self sufficient where key members can update the data themselves and each member can update his/her own information.
