METAR Data Access
Current and recent METAR reports from around the world are available from the NWS either through this presentation or via anonymous FTP at ftp://weather.noaa.gov/data/observations/metar . METAR observations are available as individual reports or in cycle files . The information available here is represented in a meteorological code , however, extensive information is available about the METAR Code furnished by NESDIS.
Individual Reports
To display the most recent METAR report for one ore more observing locations, enter the four-character ICAO Location Indicators in the field below, separated by one or more blanks.
Enter one or more four-character ICAO Location Indicators below.
Make sure to enter one or more spaces between each indicator:
Cycle Files
Hourly files containing METAR reports are available here and via anonymous FTP from weather.noaa.gov in the /data/observations/metar/cycles directory. Files are named hhZ.TXT where hh is the cycle hour of all the METAR reports found in that file. (See the METAR Cycle discussion below.) All reports received are placed in these files as they are received. The files are updated approximately every five minutes as data becomes available. Reports may be duplicated within the files and multiple reports received from a station may appear in a file. SPECI reports are also included in the file.

MIT Lincoln Laboratory's aviation weather program develops weather sensing and short-term forecasting systems to reduce weather-induced accidents and delays in terminal areas by combining Lincoln Laboratory expertise in innovative signal, image and sensor data-fusion processing with physical insights furnished by staff meteorologists. Current work focuses on meteorological sensing and processing to reduce weather-induced delays in terminal airspace, utilizing the satellite-based global positioning system for civil use, and implementing automation aids for air traffic control. Major Activities Include:
  • Ceiling and Visibility Forecasting Convective Weather Forecasting Corridor Integrated Weather System (CIWS) Enhanced Echo Tops Product ... Weather Systems Processor (WSP)
  • This section discusses the principal methods used by Lincoln Laboratory to conduct research and achieve operational utilization of the system. Short discussions of major activities follow, with more information available through the links. Full copies of a number of reports and papers are provided in the

The goal of the AWRP is to increase the scientific understanding of atmospheric conditions that cause dangerous weather, which in turn, impacts aviation. The research is aimed toward producing weather observations, warnings, and forecasts that are more accurate and more accessible. AWRP funds research into aviation meteorology as it relates to problems in aviation safety or National Airspace System capacity and traffic management which may be solved or mitigated by the results of dedicated scientific studies. Various partner organizations conduct or test the research. Last change to any AWRP page: October 27, 2004.

    Geo::METAR Information
A Perl module for accessing aviation weather information.
    Introduction
Geo::METAR is Perl module for accessing aviation weather information. I am developing it for my own use, but I realize that others' needs may be served by making this available for public use. I was even able to put it to use in my [old] day job. (By "aviation weather" I'm referring to things like a cloud altitudes, temperature, wind, dew point, and so on.)
    Status
The code is distributed under the GNU Public License . If you don't like that, don't use it. Version 1.14 was released on November 24th, 2000. It contains a lot of new features (not all of which are documented yet) and fixes for several bugs.
    On CPAN
My directory on CPAN is http://www.perl.com/CPAN-local/authors/id/J/JZ/JZAWODNY/ and you can find most of my stuff there as well.
    Help Needed
If you're interested, I could use help with both the coding, testing, and documentation of extensions to this module. If you'd like to help, feel free to
