While the depiction of an Aurora aircraft seems consistent with the confines of present technological imagination, other SR-71 follow-on prognosticators suggest more alien craft. Aviation Week & Space Technology has proposed a current black aircraft that is something akin to a 1960s Sci-Fi concept. They depict an elongated diamond shaped vehicle (one hesitates to call it an aircraft) similar to a "flattened football." The airframe's dimensions might be 110 x 69 feet. Due to intense heat, the vehicle would have a heat-streaked appearance similar to that of the space shuttle. Contrary to intuition, the aft body would appear distinctly more pockmarked than the fore sections, as if the most intense heat was experienced in this region. This vehicle would have a dual propulsion system. Jet engines buried in the fuselage would propel the vehicle to supersonic speeds, when a novel external burning mechanism would take control as the fundamental propulsion method: "In the high Mach regime, misted fuel is ejected from the fuselage midsection the 'break point' of the elongated diamond across the aft surface tiles, into the area between the fuselage and a shock wave attacked to this break. In essence, the sloping, converging aft fuselage sections form the inside of a 'nozzle' and the shock boundary constitutes the outer surface, creating an expanding exhaust effect, much like that on a conventional rocket. The fuel is ignited by surface heating or other means creating combustion that accelerates the aircraft up to the Mach 6-8 regime."

15th World Conference on Nondestructive Testing

The web site provides access to the proceedings and other information on WCNDT 2000, held in Rome, 15-21 October 2000. The site contains a description of the conference programme, and links to a searchable database that provides access to the full text of the conference papers. The papers can be retrieved either by using a search box or by selecting key word descriptors. Aerospace topics covered in the proceedings include: NDE; acoustic emissions; ultrasonics; turbine blades; condition monitoring; and aging aircraft. This provides access to a National Research Council, Naval Studies Board publication prepared by the Committee for the Review of ONR's Aircraft Technology Program, National Academy Press, 2001. Built in 1957 by the Army Ballistic Missile Agency and transferred to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Propulsion and Structural Test Facility, in Huntsville, Alabama, became the primary center responsible for the development of large vehicles and rocket propulsion systems. During the 1960s, under the direction of Dr. Werner von Braun, the Saturn family of launch vehicles was developed here. This facility has supported testing of the Army Redstone Rocket, the Saturn S-1B vehicle and the F-1 engine of the Saturn 1-C vehicle employed in the Apollo program. One position of the test stand was later modified to accommodate static testing for the Solid Rocket booster currently used in the Space Shuttle program. Continually used and modified to meet new demands, the Propulsion and Structural Test Facility has played a part in testing every important rocket developed by the Redstone Arsenal and, later, the Marshall Space Flight Center. Without the Propulsion and Structural Test Facility the Apollo missions and the American Space Program would never have succeeded. Photo courtesy of NASA The Rocket Propulsion Test Complex, or the National Space Technology Laboratories, was established in the early 1960s as the national rocket test range for large rocket propulsion systems. This facility in Mississippi was the primary site for conducting research, development and certification testing on non-flight engines to improve and upgrade basic engine design and acceptable testing of flight engines. The Saturn V rocket was one of the most reliable rockets ever built for the space program and was crucial to the effort to land a man on the moon. The success of the Saturn V was dependent upon extensive ground testing of the vehicle. Once the Saturn V lifted off the pad there was no turning back for repairs. Its powered flight was brief but critical. The economics of rocketry and the physical safety of the astronauts demanded that the rocket work perfectly. This was the purpose of the Rocket Propulsion Test Facility. No Saturn V was shipped to the Kennedy Space Center until its engines were fully tested and certified. Any problem capable of causing a failure in the vehicle was discovered and corrected before the actual launch. The Rocket Propulsion Test Complex was the critical final step in certifying the Saturn V rocket ready for flight.

Since the beginning of aviation in the early 1900s, the speed and flight endurance of powered aircraft have been determined by the power and efficiency of their propulsion systems - piston engines at first, and now powerful jet engines. At NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center, engineers in the Propulsion Branch continually look for ways to improve today's aircraft engines and propulsion control systems so that America's civilian and military aircraft can operate more efficiently and with greater safety and reliability. The Propulsion Branch is part of the Center's Research Engineering Directorate.
What is Propulsion?
Jet engines are the most widely used form of propulsion on commercial and military aircraft. They generate power when a mixture of compressed air and fuel is ignited and the resulting hot gases escape through an exhaust nozzle. The reaction of the hot expanding gases exiting the exhaust nozzle produces thrust in the opposite direction and moves the aircraft forward. Most jet engines today fall into three categories - turbojet, turbofan and turboprop. The first major propulsion research project at Dryden was an Integrated Propulsion Control System (IPCS) flight tested on an F-111E in the mid-1970s. Introduction Interest in atomic energy hit full force following World War II. The scientists who had raced to produce a bomb had also developed theories for a number of possible uses for the atom. Martin Mann lists a number of them in his book, Peacetime Uses of Atomic Energy. Ideas ranged from power generation, to nuclear excavation, to nuclear propulsion for vehicles on land, sea, and in the air. There were proposals for nuclear ships, nuclear locomotives, nuclear automobiles, and nuclear aircraft.
