Introduction
Move to Oregon Description Introduction
The centerpiece or "crown jewel" of the Evergreen Aviation Museum is a plane known around the world as the "Spruce Goose." In July 1942, the world was at war. America had just lost 800,000 tons of her supply ships to German U-boats. Henry Kaiser, famed industrialist and builder of “Liberty” ships, proposed a fleet of flying transports to safely move troops and materiel across the Atlantic. Kaiser approached Howard Hughes with his idea. Together they formed the Hughes Kaiser Corporation and obtained an $18,000,000 government contract to construct three flying boats. Howard Hughes had an international reputation as an oil and businessman, movie producer, aeronautical engineer and world-class aviator. Henry Kaiser partnered with Hughes because of Hughes' aircraft design and construction expertise. Hughes and his team of skilled engineers designed a single hull flying boat capable of carrying 750 troops. The plans called for eight 3,000 horsepower engines, a mammoth fuel storage and supply system, and wings 20 feet longer than a football field. They called the prototype aircraft the HK-1, standing for the Hughes Kaiser design number one.

Photography exhibit featuring Mark Greenberg

Mark Greenberg's passion for aviation photography began in 1984 with the historic Voyager project. It's here that he first met Burt and Dick Rutan, Jeana Yeager, Bruce Evans, Mike and Sally Melvill, and Doug Shane. From that day forward, Greenberg has documented through pictures the momentous endeavors of these extraordinary people as they continued to make aviation history. He has even had the good fortune to follow the exploits and adventures of Sir Richard Branson and his GobalFlyer project. Greenberg's photography masterfully captures their spirit and depicts the true wonder of aviation. These magnificent images are sure to be an inspiration to young minds.

This National Monument on the site of the continent's first flying school comprises a symbolic memorial, a reconstruction of the hangar and a replica of the Compton Paterson Biplane used flight training. It commemorates the role played by early aviators in establishing the South African Air Force of today . Aviation history in Kimberley dates back to 6 June 1911 when John Weston made the first flight in the city establishing a South African non-stop flight record of eight-and-a-half minutes in his Weston-Farman biplane. His energy and drive led to the formation of the Aeronautical Society of South Africa in 1911. he was, however, prevented from ever establishing a flying school. This was left to The African Aviation Syndicate. Captain Guy Livingston, Cecil Compton Paterson and E.F. (Bok) Driver arrived in Cape Town in December 1911 for a series of demonstration flights. These demonstrations, including one in Kimberley and the first Air mail flight, brought aviation to public notice. A flying school was then established at Alexandersfontein, but no pupils were trained there, owing to the liquidation of the Syndicate in September 1912. By buying up the assets of the Syndicate, a group of prominent Kimberley businessmen enabled Paterson to continue his flying activities. He immediately negotiated the building of a hangar at Alexandersfontein and established his own flying school. Paterson also negotiated with the Union Government to have military pilots trained at his flying school and in May 1913 applications were invited for candidates for training as officer-aviators. In July 1913 The Paterson Aviation Syndicate was registered and on 10 September General J.C.Smuts signed a Memorandum of Agreement with Paterson whereby ten pupils were to be trained as pilots.

On display in the museum are various aero engines from early piston engines through to the Rolls Royce Merlin (as used in the Spitfire). There are more modern jet turbine engines including an early Frank Whittle design, as fitted to early jet aircraft such as the Meteor.
