Aircraft Engines in Armored Vehicles A s military planners began to realize the need for armored vehicles prior to World War II, they were faced with the problem of powering such vehicles. The requirements were, aside from the weight issue, similar to those of aircraft—the engines needed to be compact, powerful, reliable and economical to operate. The use of aircraft engines in tanks was not a new idea. The V-12 Liberty from World War I developed Liberty 338 hp @ 1400 rpm. Starting in 1920, it powered the Mk. VIII of which (100) were built. The Continental R-670 first flew in 1931. In addition to its uses in aircraft, it became an extremely popular tank engine. It was a 7-cylinder radial that developed between 235 hp @ 2,400 rpm and 250 hp @ 2,400 rpm when used in armored vehicles. It powered the M1 (89), M1A1 (17), M1A2 (89), M2A1 (19), M2A2 (237), M2A3 (237), M2A4 (375), M3 (4,526), M3A1 (4,410), M3A3 (3,427), Turreted M1 (16), Barbette M1 (3), LVT2 (2,963), LVT(A)1 (509), LVT(A)2 (450), LVT4 (8,348), LVT(A)4 (1,890), and LVT(A)5 (269) (the number produced appears in parentheses after the designation).

Early Aviation History 2005 Flight of the Vimy In-Flight Dispatches History of the Vimy Early Aviation History ... Three Historic Flights
Historical Photos of the Vimy The British-made Vickers bomber, the Vimy, was designed for use during World War I. It was named for a 1917 battle at Vimy, France, where Canadian troops took a ridge defended by Germans. The plane, however, was not in production before the 1918 armistice. The Vickers design came into its own in 1919 and 1920 when models of the Vimy won three long distance, globe-spanning races that dazzled the world and bolstered the concepts of long-distance travel by air and commercial uses such as air mail. Aviation history as Global Hawk completes US-Australia flight
News Article

PARLSEC 105/01
The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Global Hawk made international aviation history today when it completed the first non-stop flight across the Pacific Ocean by an autonomous aircraft, flying from Edwards Air Force Base on the west coast of the U.S. to RAAF Base Edinburgh, South Australia.
Global Hawk
Global Hawk, renamed Southern Cross II for its deployment to Australia, ended its 22hour first trans-Pacific flight at the Royal Australian Air Force’s Edinburgh Base north of Adelaide at 9pm last night. It will be based at Edinburgh for the next six weeks. Dr Brendan Nelson, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence said this was a historic moment in world aviation. "Emerging systems such as Global Hawk offer Australia great potential for surveillance, reconnaissance and ultimately the delivery of combat power," Dr Nelson said. While in country, the Global Hawk air vehicle number five will fly about 12 missions around Australia and its maritime approaches allowing Australia’s Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO), the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and the U.S. to jointly assess the military utility of high altitude endurance UAVs to conduct maritime, littoral and land surveillance, and stand-off reconnaissance operations.

Swedish aviation history
The debate about founding a Swedish Aviation Committee started when a group of distinguished men met at a posh restaurant in December 1900 in Stockholm.
Nevertheless there have been other persons who were persistent to build a real aircraft. One of them was the industrialist Carl R. Nyberg, the inventor of the blowtorch. He was trying to build an extremely light aircraft powered by two steam engines since 1894, unfortunately without any success. It was at first in the spring of 1909, when one of the members from the Aviation Committee contacted a Danish flight pioneer Folmer Hansen that the first flight with an airplane was being planned in Sweden. Hansen came together with his French co-pilot George Legagneux to Stockholm in July 1909. They brought a Voisin plane owned by Hansen. While they waited for reasonable flying conditions they advertised their presence in newspapers. Swedish flight pioneers Enoch Thulin was a doctor of Mathematics at the University of Lund. His interest in flying sent him to France, where he learned to fly. During the First World War the demand of Swedish made airplanes aroused. Enoch Thulin started a flight enterprise in the southern Swedish town of Landskrona. Airplanes of French design were built to start with. Later on airplanes of Swedish design were developed and built.
