Legends
The Czech counterpart of Ikaros was Vit Fucik, also called Kudlicka (little knife) for his manual skills. According to a folk legend, he made wings from wood rods and bladders filled with natural gas, and used these to fly to the market in Pisek. Since his existence is doubtful, we'll stick with recorded facts.
Balloons
The first balloon was launched in 1783 by the Montgolfier brothers. The first manned flight took place the same year. The first balloon in the Czech lands was launched one year later by Tadeas Hanka, a scholar.
First Attempts
In the days of balloons and airships, during the 1800s, many pioneers attempted to build "heavier than air" aircraft. These included Czech technician Vaclav Kaderavek with his "Czech flying machine". His attempts failed, because man powered or electro-magnet powered flight exceeded technical and financial possibilities of the day.
First Aircraft
The first real flight was realized by the Wright brothers with an engine powered biplane in the US in 1903. Santos Dumont took off in his aircraft in Paris in 1906. In 1909, Louis Bleriot crossed the English Channel.

Aviation History Magazine - May 2005 Letters VETERAN NOSE ARTIST
Lisa Mann's fine article about nose art ("Art of Flight" in the January 2005 issue) reminded me of my friend Amos "Nick" Nicholson, who served in the 343rd Squadron, 98th Bomb Group, Fifteenth Air Force, in World War II. He was first stationed in Libya, where he painted Prince Charming and the Seven Dwarfs on the noses of Consolidated B-24s. He was inspired by one Liberator that had Snow White on its nose one of the first B-24Ds to be ferried from Florida to North Africa. "I wasn't an artist, but they told me to paint, so I painted," Nick recalled. "I just knocked the big chunks of dirt off the fuselage and painted. I figured my art wouldn't last long, anyway."

"the hardest part of the whole thing" said Batchelor, "was the journey out and back"
Story by Jack Meadows
Published with permission from West Coast Aviator Magazine continued from page two Dusting had led naturally to spraying, both crop spraying and spruce bud worm spraying. New Brunswick was suffering a severe attack of the latter and wanted help from all over the continent. Skyway's fleet of five Stearmans flew east each spring and back each fall on the Budworm contract. As can easily be imagined "the hardest part of the whole thing" said Batchelor, "was the journey out and back" Another natural development was fire fighting by water bombing. In 1952, experiments were started with Stearmans. It was soon clear that aircraft's capacity was far too limited. There had been an infestation of spruce budworm on Vancouver Island and Seller had called in three Grumman Avenger TBMs from south of the border to help. He had thus seen what this aircraft could do. So, when in 1957. the Canadian Navy put eighteen surplus Avengers up for sale, Seller took a chance, bid on them and got seventeen for prices ranging from $1700 - $7,000. Fairey Aviation, at Victoria modified them for Skyway's use.

History of Marine Corps Aviation
1950's - Technological Development
History of Marine Corps Aviation AcePilots Main Page WW2 Marine Aces Both in Korea and Japan, the period was one of intensive training, including landing exercises and joint exercises with the Army and the Air Force, concentrating on bombing and gunnery. One program within the wing was an exchange program between Japan-based and Korean-based squadrons. The objective of the program was to familiarize pilots new to the area with flight conditions in Korea, just in case the ceasefire didn't work out. In June 1956, the 1st MAW moved its headquarters to NAS Iwakuni, Japan, and control of the wing passed from the 5th AF to Commander in Chief, Pacific Fleet (CinCPac), in Hawaii, thus ending Marine Aviation participation in the Korean police action. For Marine Aviation, this period between the Korean War and the major involvement of the U.S. in Vietnam in 1965 was characterized mainly by research and development. New aircraft in Marine Aviation reflected the tremendous effects of technological advances during the period leading up to Vietnam. The types which most advanced Marine Aviation capability during this nine year period were:
  • jet fighter and attack aircraft helicopters turboprop transport
It all began in 1947 with the commissioning of HMX- 1 at Quantico to develop the use of helicopters, and VMF-122 flying the first jet, the FH-1 Phantom at Cherry Point. These were closely followed by VMF-311 at El Toro in 1948, first with TO-1s (F-80Cs), the Lockheed Shooting Star jet indoctrination of experienced pilots, and then late in 1949 operating the F9F Panther for normal fighter/attack training.

Just a century ago, a journey of 300 miles took days to complete. Today, thanks to swift aircraft, that same trip takes just minutes. Though the history of the Wright Brothers is often tied to Kitty Hawk North Carolina , the brothers also spent plenty of time in Maryland . In 1909, they set up an airfield to teach military pilots how to fly. Today College Park Airport is the oldest continuously operating airport in the world. The College Park Aviation Museum at the airport is one of four Maryland sites participating in a cooperative venture called A list of Maryland sites that relate to aviation and aeronautics follows.
