TEST OF STRENGTH
A small group of pioneer Navy and Marine Corps aviators had nurtured the early growth of Naval aeronautics, but it was too small and poorly equipped to wage war. When the call came in April 1917, one air station was operating, 48 aviators and students were available; 54 aircraft were on hand, but none of them had been designed for the work that would be required.
In the 19 months between declaration of war and the armistice, expansion was remarkable (see Appendix 4). Air stations sprang up on both sides of the Atlantic. Training programs were established at new air stations, on university campuses, and even with private industry. The Naval Reserve Flying Corps produced thousands of aviators, ground officers, mechanics and technical specialists. Aircraft of many types were produced, and one aircraft engine advanced from concept to mass production and operation.
The speed and breadth of the expansion produced an expected chaos, but Naval aviation nonetheless won a good wartime record. One of its units was the first from the United States to reach France. Naval aircraft flew more than 3 million nautical miles and attacked and damaged a dozen U-boats. By war's end, Navy and Marine Corps squadrons had organized the Northern Bombing Group which was preparing a round-the-clock air campaign which would have been the first strictly American air offensive of the war. When hostilities ceased, the Navy and Marine Corps aviators were using 27 bases in Europe, two in Canada, one in the Canal Zone, one in the Azores, and 12 in the United States.

Chapter 3: U.S. Navy Museums
The U.S. Navy operates twelve museums located throughout the United States and the historic ship USS Constitution in close association with the nonprofit USS Constitution Museum in Boston, Massachusetts. These activities provide visitors and researchers an opportunity to become familiar with the rich and varied history of the U.S. Navy, its customs and traditions, and the evolution of its multifaceted mission. Exhibits, artifacts, and programs sponsored by these museums chronicle specific aspects of U.S. naval history from the American Revolution to the present. Most of the museums receive assistance from nonprofit, non-governmental foundations. Those organizations operate museum stores and undertake other fundraising activities to support their associated museums. Several Navy museums are members of the Council of American Maritime Museums, an organization focused on preserving America's maritime history and heritage. United States Navy Museum

(standing for Aeronautical Research and Test Institute, plc) was founded as early as May 1 st , 1922 as the Institute for Air Navigation Studies under the auspices of the Ministry of Defence. All types of Czechoslovak aircraft have passed through the Institute´s labs to date. In pre-war years the main focus of the Institute was on aerodynamics and strength of structure calculations. The aeroplanes made in Czech manufacturing plants Letov, Aero, Avia, and Praga were tested here. After the war, the Institute became a civilian institution. All the design work previously carried out in factories was transferred to the Institute. The VZLÚ designed our successful airplanes such as the first Czech-made jet L-29 Dolphin, the L-13 Blaník glider, sports planes, helicopters an others. Since mid sixties the Institute participated in designing new aircraft, the L-39 Albatros jet trainer, L-410 commuter, and sports planes. For most of them new engines have been developed as well as propellers, an ejection seat and other systems in close co-operation with the manufacturers. In terms of electronics, one should not pass the first Czech flight simulator, a control and diagnostic system, and a flight-deck system PES. The VZLÚ conducted wind-tunnel measurement, all fatigue and strength-of-structure measurements, as well as most aerodynamic calculations aimed to increase the aircraft life. In addition, some non-aviation products were tested, such as transport vehicles, buildings, and civil engineering structures.

Naval Aviation has also been at the cutting edge of aerospace history: the first successful crossing of the Atlantic by an aircraft, exploration of high altitude flight, exploration of the Arctic and Antarctic and exploration of outer space. Coast Guard, Marine Corps and Navy pilots pioneered the use of one of the
century's most dynamic inventions for peaceful and combat purposes: the helicopter.
The common denominator for those who participated in this exciting history was their training in a sleepy little Southern city on the Gulf of Mexico: Pensacola, Florida. These young men and women all arrived in Pensacola with the same dream: winning the coveted wings of gold. It was here that the fledglings tested their mettle against the demands of flying aircraft. They learned the unique skills required to fly from ships at sea, find distant targets and return to their moving, rolling and pitching "airfield," often in bad weather and frequently at night.
It makes perfect sense that Pensacola has a world-class museum to commemorate its place in history.

Home Alberta's Aviation Heritage - Home Aviation in Alberta dates back to the first decade of the 20th century. Alberta has had an important role in the history and development of aviation in Canada and the world. Explore the exciting history of the early pioneers and war heroes, such as Wop May, who helped start commercial aviation in Alberta and open up the north as never before. Alberta hosted some of the first official military pilot training programs that produced thousands of Second World War pilots and navigators at airfields across the province. Albertans were also among the most influential commercial and passenger aviators and innovators in Canada, and still play an important role in the ever-changing world of military and commercial aviation. This is demonstrated by the Foundation's partner, the Alberta Aviation Museum , whose collections are featured throughout this website.

The following lecture was given by Daniel Hagedorn, Adjunct Curator for Latin American Aviation at the National Air and Space Museum.
It is a distinct pleasure and honor for me to speak to so distinguished an assembly on a subject that has been my personal passion for some thirty-five years now. During these next few minutes, I will bring you but a very brief glimpse of the very rich and eventful history of aviation in Latin America, with emphasis on the post-World War II period. Both military and naval aviation will be touched upon as well as the civilian and commercial sphere. Needless to say, it would take far longer than the few moments we will share today to convey the entire breadth of the subject. However, perhaps in these selected examples you will leave with a richer understanding of what has gone before. It will probably come as something of a surprise to you to learn that a Latin American aeronaut actually flew before the Wright brothers. But way before someone rushes out to alert the "Washington Post," the aeronaut in question flew in a lighter-than-air dirigible of his own design, rather than a fixed wing, controllable, powered aircraft, which claim is still held by the immortal Wright brothers. The airman in question was, of course

    - Mike
I'd have to say that the Wright Brothers' flight on December 17, 1903 is the most important event in aviation history. On this date, for the first time in history, a manned, powered aircraft proved that such flight was possible. Up to that time, most scientists and researchers believed that "heavier-than-air" flight was impossible and not worth pursuing. After the Wrights proved their critics wrong, the field of aeronautical engineering was born, and governments and universities began dedicating resources to understanding the science of flight and how to make aircraft more efficient. In essence, every event and discovery in aviation led up to or followed from the flight of the Wright Flyer. For more information on aviation history, I'd recommend the following sites:

The development of the airplane and other heavier-than-air craft has had the most far-reaching effects of any 20th-century invention. Although many scientific disciplines are involved in the rapid advances in aviation technology, none is as important as the aircraft itself. In this article the anatomy of an airplane is examined along with recent developments in such unconventional aircraft as helicopters. Basic principles of flight can be found in aerodynamics; the history of airplane development and a description of contemporary air transportation are the subjects of aviation and airports. Americans have always been fascinated by the possibility of flight. On June 24, 1784, only seven months after Pilatre de Rozier and the Marquis D'Arlandes became the first human beings to fly, thirteen-year-old Edward Warren rose above the streets of Baltimore aboard a balloon constructed by Peter Carnes, a lawyer and tavern keeper from Maryland. During the next century, balloons became a familiar sight, but the gaily decorated gasbags were captives of the wind. Navigating in air with the freedom of the birds came only with the invention of the airplane. During the 1890s Octave Chanute and Samuel Pierpont Langley helped set the stage for achieving winged flight. In 1896, Langley, the secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, launched a series of large, steam-powered model aircraft on flights of up to three-quarters of a mile over the Potomac River. Several months later, Chanute, a civil engineer, led a band of assistants into the dune country east of Chicago, where they flew a series of manned gliders, including an advanced biplane. Wilbur and Orville Wright, the proprietors of a bicycle shop in Dayton, Ohio, wrote to Langley and Chanute in 1899-1900, requesting information on aeronautics and announcing their decision to conduct their own tests. They made the world's first powered, sustained, and controlled flights with a heavier-than-air flying machine at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, on December 17, 1903. Unwilling to risk unveiling their technology without the protection of a patent and a contract for the sale of airplanes, the Wrights did not make their flights in public until 1908. By that time, photographs and descriptions of their machine had inspired other pioneers to follow their lead.
