The History

and
Modern Rocketry Introduction The X-1 and the sound barrier Robert Goddard The X-15 - To the edge of space ... Sputnik - The Space Race begins
The twentieth century marked a turning point for mankind, from the industrial age to the space age. Some may argue that we are in the information age and if so, it was brought about through the knowledge and technology gained from our aviation, rocket and space pioneers. The rapid transfer of information today cannot and would not have occurred, for example, without satellites and satellites could not have occurred without aviation and rocket technology. And soon, early in the 21st century, these two technologies will converge to produce an aerospace plane that will make traveling to space as commonplace as airline travel is today. This is not a detailed history of all aviation or rocketry but only those events that led mankind toward spaceflight. Aviation history began on December 17, 1903 at 10:35 a.m. from Kill Devil hill outside the village of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Orville Wright took off, in the face of a 27 mile-per-hour wind, and covered 120 feet in 12 seconds during the world's first powered, sustained, and controlled flight. He had "won" this place in history from his brother, Wilbur, by a flip of a coin.

Regiment motto
Fact Sheet
The 160th received its baptism by fire during Operation URGENT FURY in Grenada. Despite flying against a heavily armed Cuban and Grenadan force, the Task Force was able to complete its mission. Since 1983, the unit has responded to numerous missions at the request of the National Command Authority. This includes the eminently successful MOUNT HOPE III Operation in June 1988, performed in the most demanding environmental flight conditions imaginable, clearly demonstrating the ability of man and machine to strike deep, accomplish the mission and return safely. Night Stalkers participated in Operations PRIME CHANCE conducting sustained operations and ably supported a joint military Task Force under extraordinarily difficult and hazardous conditions. Aircrews of the 160th habitually operated 30 feet above the water, at night, using night vision goggles and forward looking infrared devices. Operation PRIME CHANCE resulted in the first successful night combat engagement which neutralized an enemy threat while using Aviator Night Vision Goggles and Forward Looking Infrared Devices.

The recognition not only honors the Purdue Airport's place in history, but also the role Purdue's graduates and staff have played in the 102-year history of powered flight and in space exploration. "Purdue has a long history of contributions to the fields of aviation and astronautics," said airport director Betty Stansbury. "This honor is a testament to the people who have made Purdue's programs some of the best, from pioneers like Amelia Earhart and Neil Armstrong to today's students who will usher in the next generation of advances and exploration." The recognition ceremony is part of a week of activities surrounding the Women's Air Race Classic, the country's longest-running and only remaining women-only air race. The race, which will include 41 teams of pilots, will begin and end at the Purdue Airport and run from June 21-24. Purdue's long history in aviation also was one of the reasons the university was selected as only the second university to serve as race host. Amelia Earhart and

Glenn Curtiss left indelible mark on aviation history
Hell Rider to King of the Air: Glenn Curtiss's Life of Innovation - New SAE Publication Warrendale, PA, March 26, 2004 - World history is full of stories about people who were not actually the first in their field, but through entrepreneurial spirit, creativity, risk-taking, and persistence - were far more successful than the so-called "ground breakers". Bill Gates, Henry Ford, and The Beatles come to mind. Glenn Curtiss lent his name to many patents and successful business ventures, but the complex life story of one of mobility's pioneers is not as well known. Author Kirk W. House profiles Glenn Curtiss in Hell Rider to King of the Air: Glenn Curtiss's Life of Innovation (SAE new Hardcover Book R-314), and says it well. "…often more important than primacy are the questions of influence. Glenn Curtiss was one of the most influential men in the development of the motorcycle with its industry, the airplane with its industry, and the travel trailer with its industry - not to mention the development of southeastern Florida." In his 52-years (1878 - 1930) Glenn Curtiss parlayed an eighth grade education into the titles "Fastest Man on Earth", "Father of Naval Aviation", inventor of the aileron, holder of the first pilots license, motorcycle design innovator, and one of the most creative inventors and transportation designers of all time. A contemporary of the Wright Brothers, his relationship with them deteriorated from admired colleague, to respected competitor, to despised alleged imitator.

LAKELAND'S AVIATION HISTORY AND MUNICIPAL AIRPORTS (RG2720) 1936-1993
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE This collection includes photocopies of National Archives documents relating to a Works Progress Administration project providing additional development and improvement for the Lakeland Municipal Airport (#1) located north of town on Lakeland Hills Blvd. adjacent to Lake Parker. This is the current location of Joker Marchant Stadium and Tigertown, the Detroit Tigers Spring Training site. The project called for the construction of hangars, paved runways, field lighting, relocation of the administration building, and installation of additional drainage. The intent of this development was to bring the airport up to Class Three specifications. Types of photocopied materials include project proposals (W.P.A. form 301), correspondence, newspaper articles, check sheets, memoranda, notes, telegrams and certificates from 1936 to 1941.
Also included are project proposals from 1938-39 for the removal of water hyacinths from Lake Parker. The purpose of their removal was to make possible the development and operation of a seaplane base on the shores of the lake next to the aviation school (Lodwick School of Aeronautics during WWII).

The Spirit of Innovation
The First Flight
Early Years
1999 and Beyond
On December 17, 1903, amid the dunes of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, Wilbur and Orville Wright achieved one of civilized man's fondest dreams - flight. It lasted only twelve seconds, but that brief flight of a manned, heavier-than-air machine ushered in the age of aviation. Ironically, this milestone, which marked one of the greatest advancements in the history of man, was witnessed by only a handful of people and was largely overlooked by most newspapers of the day. We express thanks and gratitude to Orville and Wilbur Wright, Glenn Curtiss, and the other early pioneers of aviation who took those first steps. The Wright brothers perfected their design to the point where they could sustain flights of 24 miles in which they could bank, turn and do "figure eights." But in 1905, when the Wright brothers offered their invention to the United States army, it was rejected without any consideration. Even the patent office was skeptical; an application filed in 1903 was finally approved and granted in 1906 for a "flying machine." In 1909, the first great international aviation meet was held in Rheims, France. Sure of victory, the Wright brothers entered three planes in hopes of dominating the event. A young unknown won the competition. His name was Glenn Curtiss.

It gave me a feeling of grim satisfaction to read that events subsequent to my resignation from the R.A.F. confirms that people much smarter than I agreed with my disgust at the stupid policy whereby the Hon. Duncan Sandys (then the British defence minister) proposed to abolish all U.K. manned fighter defences and replace them only with ground to air missile defences. Fortunately wiser heads later prevailed but by that time I had packed it in and returned to Canada.
This book certainly confirms that Canada had a fabulous opportunity to be a world leader in the development of modern fighter aircraft, but let that opportunity slip from our grasp.

Bjorkstadius' Wings
(English version)

The first flying attempts in Sweden were, most likely, carried out in the 1630s by Matthias Bjorkstadius in the town of Vaesteras in central Sweden. Bjorkstadius, a mathematician by profession, served as a teacher at the local gymnasium, later on in life also as a priest at the cathedral chapter. Bjorkstadius was technologically quite advanced for his age, designing a new type of rifle, constructing an astronomical clock, making geographical maps. The book gives an account not only of Bjorkstadius life and technological work but also traces the historical development of aeronautical thought and its influence on Bjorkstadius. Moscow 2002 64 pp. 22 Illustrations ISBN 5-900078-18-3. Price: 15 Euro (excl. shipping) Svensk Flyghistorisk Bibliografi 1630-1899 Early Swedish aviation has, with some notable exceptions like Swedenborgs flying saucer from the beginning of the 18th century, attracted limited interest. This is somewhat surprising given the multitude of aeronautical experiments that took place in Sweden during the 19th century and before. The earliest roots of flight by man in the country can be traced back to the 1630-ies. The bibliography covers Swedish and foreign aviation, published in Sweden, for the years 1630 to 1899. Material was collected from a variety of different sources, amongst others a great number of newspapers. All entries are presented in Swedish and in English. Special sections deal with Swedish constructors and aeronauts, balloon voyages (more than 1000), military aviation, regulation of aviation, aviation patents. The bibliography contains a comprehensive list av aeronautical classics from France, Germany, England, Russia and the United States published during the period 1600 to 1899.
