AVMT 101 Are you an aviation enthusiast? Ever wonder how in just over 100 years aviation has evolved from an airplane held together with wood, wire and fabric to today's high-tech transports and supersonic aircraft?
AVMT 101 will explore the development of the airplane and the helicopter (and a few contraptions in between!) as technology evolved and advancements were implemented.
This course will also give you an appreciation for those designers and test pilots who made supreme sacrifices in pursuing the dream of flying higher, faster, and farther.
Finally, we will explore the profound effect that aviation has had on economic, political, and military advancements worldwide. Course
Description:
AVMT 101 - 3 credits - Aviation History and Development explores the evolution of aviation, focusing on the rapid growth of the aviation industry and its influence on economic, military, and political advancement. Progressive developments in aircraft design, aerodynamics, powerplants, government agencies, and the national airspace system will be related. Course
Objectives:
Introduce the student to the aviation industry.

ANCHORAGE aviation history development. An examination of aviation developmentin Anchorage reveals a remarkable growth steeped in history and tradition.

Find You are here : Home Departments Merrill Field spacer spacer spacer An examination of aviation development in Anchorage reveals a remarkable growth steeped in history and tradition. In 75 years Anchorage has grown from a meager railroad construction site with no aviation facilities, to a major player in today's air commerce system with five controlled airports and over twenty uncontrolled airports within the municipality. Anchorage's five controlled airports are all located within a seven mile radius of downtown. These airports recorded over 707,000 takeoffs and landings in 1990. This activity rivals that of the nation's major cities such as Chicago, whose O'Hare Airport (the world's busiest) recorded 790,000 operations. To understand the dynamics and importance of aviation to the growth of Anchorage, we need to explore the past, the present, and the future. In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson appointed the Alaskan Engineering Commission to construct a railroad from the Ship Creek landing to the coal fields in the Matanuska Valley. This construction brought an influx of labors which promoted the planning and construction of the present town site. Although Alaskan aviation originated in Fairbanks in 1913, Anchorage quickly became the "Air Crossroads." Anchorage's illustrious aviation history began disastrously with the crash of its first airplane. C.O. Hammertree, an Anchorage World War I aviator and machine shop operator, shipped a Boeing seaplane to Anchorage.

Douglas DC-1, 2 and 3 USA The DC-3 was to become perhaps the most important airliner in history. It quickly established its reputation with this and other operators, including the military. The early 1930s saw a complete transformation of commercial air transport with the introduction of the Boeing Model 247. At last the majestic but lumbering biplane was giving way to the sleek low-wing, all-metal monoplane airliner. However, such was the interest in the that Boeing could guarantee delivery only to United Airlines, who had ordered the first sixty. History owes a lot to TWA, for the development of the DC-1. Transcontinental and Western Air (TWA) therefore issued a requirement to other manufacturers for a similar airliner a challenge which Douglas accepted. It built the DC-1, in many ways a more refined aircraft, although it flew for the first time on 1 July 1933, only four months after the Model 247 entered service. When it was handed over to TWA, it flew in record time between Los Angeles and New York. Impressed, the airline placed an immediate contract for 28 more Douglas airliners, but in an even more refined form. The production airliner delivered by Douglas was the DC-2, which began operations in July 1934.

The Hawker Typhoon and Tempest Great Britian A Hawker Typhoon IB with underwing bomb load and early cockpit hood. It is an accepted maxim for successful aircraft development that future requirements should always be the principal concern of the chief designer and his project design team. The company which allows itself to become wholly preoccupied with the development of an established design may produce, as a result, an outstanding aeroplane, but the policy is a shortsighted one if no new prototype is following to consolidate this success. Thus, the fact that Sydney Camm, Hawker Aircraft's chief designer, was at work on a new fighter as a potential replacement for the Hurricane as early as 1937, when the first production aircraft of that type had still to fly, reflected no lack of confidence in the Hurricane's potentialities but the natural desire to ensure that its service successor would be a product of the same stable.
This massive new fighter, the heaviest and most powerful single-seat single-engined warplane envisaged at the time of its design, was to suffer a long gestatory period. It was to be pressed into operational service before it was fully developed and, in consequence, acquire a worse reputation among its pilots than that of any fighter preceding it. It was fated to be rarely employed in the interceptor role for which it was originally conceived. Yet, despite its vicissitudes, it was to blossom into one of the most formidable weapons evolved during the Second World War; a close-support fighter that was to turn the scales in many land battles and upset many conceptions of land warfare.

MMA / P8A The Idea In late 1958 Boeing announced a design study for "A twin engined feeder airliner to complete the family of Boeing passenger jets". In Feb 1965 the first order was placed and the project went ahead. The 737 has since become the best selling commercial aircraft in aviation history with more than 5,900 orders from 225 customers so far. Here are some statistics to illustrate its success:
  • About 1,250 737s are in the air at any time. A 737 takes off somewhere in the world every 5 seconds. The 737 fleet has flown about 296 million hours in revenue service, travelling 75 billion nautical miles in 232 million flights. 737’s have carried about 12 billion passengers.
Design The original 1964 specification was for a capacity of about 60-85 passengers, an economical operating range of between 100 and 1000 miles and to be able to break even at a 35% load factor. As a result of final design talks with launch customer Lufthansa the capacity was increased to 100, but the range and load factor figures still stand. Where to put the Engines The disadvantage of wing-mounted engines was that the size of the fin had to be increased for engine-out operation over centreline thrust aircraft. Also, due to the reduced ground clearance, the engines had to be almost an integral part of the wing, which in turn necessitated a short chord. The engines extended both forward and aft of the wing to reduce aerodynamic interference (further improved by the longer tailpipe of the target thrust reversers in 1969) and the straight top line of the nacelle formed a "stream tube" (aka streamline flow) over the wing to further reduce drag.

Aviation history
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Icarus and Daedalus Humanity's desire to fly probably dates back to the first time prehistoric man observed birds. Through all of recorded history aspects of this desire have surfaced from time to time. The most well known is the legendary story of Daedalus and Icarus . Daedalus was trapped on the island of Minos, and so built wings out of feathers and wax for himself and his son. His son Icarus flew too close to the sun and the wax melted, destroying the wings and causing Icarus to fall into the sea, killing him. The legend was designed to be a cautionary tale about attempting to reach heaven, similar to the Tower of Babel story in The Bible . Nevertheless, it exemplifies man's desire to fly. The modern history of aviation has had several broad trends. Aircraft designers have struggled to make their planes go faster, fly higher, and be controlled more easily. To that effect, engine designs have moved towards more compact, more powerful designs, beginning with steam engines and ending with jet and rocket engines . Planes have become more streamlined and made of stronger and lighter materials. Initially airplanes were made of canvas and wood . Today airplanes are made of aluminium , and increasingly, carbon fiber , which is prized for its lightness and strength. The methods used to control planes have advanced significantly as well. Initially planes were controlled by moving your entire body (
