North American History home John Leland "Lee" Atwood
John Leland (Lee) Atwood joined North American Aviation, Inc. in 1934, one year before the firm moved from Dundalk, Maryland, to Southern California. He previously worked at Douglas Aircraft in Southern California, builder of such venerable transports as the DC-3, so he would cross the country twice in a short time. He soon became a vice president, and in 1938 was named assistant general manager of the company. In 1941, he became first vice president; in 1948 he was elected president; in 1960 he became chief executive officer at the retirement of Dutch Kindelberger ; and in 1962 he became chairman of the board. Mr. Atwood was born in Walton, Kentucky on Oct. 26, 1904. He attended Hardin-Simmons University from 1924 to 1926, receiving a bachelor of arts degree, then completed postgraduate engineering courses at the University of Texas, earning a bachelor of science degree in 1928. A number of leaders in the aerospace industry have described Mr. Atwood as "a chief engineer's chief engineer." His technical acumen was the driving force behind the company's evolution into an aviation and space leader which produced more military aircraft than any other company (a record which stands to this day). Among those aircraft: the P-51 Mustang, a swift, agile WWII fighter with an especially impressive record in the aerial war in Europe; the B-25 Mitchell bomber, used by Jimmy Doolittle and his Tokyo Raiders to turn the tide of the war in the Pacific; the T-6 Texan, which almost every U.S. and British WWII pilot trained in; and the F-86 SabreJet fighter, which exhibited a superiority of 10-to-1 or better against Russian MiGs in Korea.

ne of France´s most famous aviators, Roland Garros was also a pioneer. Starting in 1911, just two years later, on September 23, 1913, he flew across the Mediterranean, from Saint-Raphael to Bizerte. He also set several world altitude records. From the beginning of the war he took part in aerial combat, and along with the engineer Saulnier, invented a method for firing a machine gun through the propeller. Captured by the Germans, he escaped and returned to the "Stork" squadron, later to be killed in a dogfight. Each year, the French Open is held in "Roland Garros Stadium", near the Porte d´Auteuil along the western edge of Paris. George Messier

graduate of the prestigious Arts et Manufactures engineering school, Louis Seguin was the great grand-nephew of the Montgolfier brothers, inventors of the hot-air balloon. He was also the grandson of Marc Seguin, a pioneer in flapping wing type aircraft, and inventor of the tubular boiler and suspension bridges. Louis Seguin and his brother Laurent were among the original aviation pioneers, adapting an industrial gas engine (the "Gnom") for use in aircraft. They developed the Gnôme Omega rotary engine, which enjoyed considerable success around the world through the middle of the first world war.

Transmission Mechanism Patent No. 1,005,186. Henry Ford held many patents on automotive mechanisms, but is best remembered for helping devise the factory assembly approach to production that revolutionized the auto industry by greatly reducing the time required to assemble a car. Born in Wayne County, Michigan, Ford showed an early interest in mechanics, constructing his first steam engine at the age of 15. In 1893 he built his first internal combustion engine, a small one-cylinder gasoline model, and in 1896 he built his first automobile. In June 1903 Ford helped establish Ford Motor Company. He served as president of Ford from 1906 to 1919 and from 1943 to 1945. MUSIC RECORD : Emile Berliner
Born June 13, 1911 - Died September 1, 1988. Radio Distance and Direction Indicator Patent No. 2,480,208. During World War II, he designed a landing system for aircraft and a radar system for locating planes. Later, he helped develop the hydrogen bubble chamber, used to detect subatomic particles. This research led to the discovery of over 70 elementary particles and resulted in a major revision of nuclear theories.

eEXHIBIT 2004 The Artists Ron Hart Long inspired by the works of N.C. Wyeth and Maxfield Parrish, Ron studied at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco, specializing in illustration and design. He went on to serve as a pilot for American Airlines for 22 years. He has always considered himself a full time artist and was never far from an easel and paint brushes. An inveterate people watcher, Ron has been fortunate to be able to observe a large cross section of humanity in his travels, which aided him in developing an artistic style that he characterizes as “narrative/expressive.” Hart finds there is room for whimsy in art, and takes many opportunities to imbue his accomplished paintings with charm and caprice. Whether creating landscapes, portraiture, still life studies, or aviation art, Ron makes a conscious decision at the onset of each piece whether to be serious or inject his natural tendency toward humor, resulting in a diverse body of masterful images. Alison Boyle Alison Boyle was born in England and already internationally established as a portrait and landscape artist when introduced to military aviation by her marriage to an Army Officer. Taking advantage of the unique opportunity and permission to observe these military aircraft closely, she uses her ‘eye for detail’ and the critique of the pilots to create authentic paintings. Alison has a series of lithographic prints of Army helicopter paintings.

"The future generations of modelers need our experience, our knowledge and our example to follow - just as we followed in the steps of our modeling heroes," according to AMA Historian Norm Rosenstock.
This program is an effort by the National Model Aviation Museum to preserve the history of model aviation. The goal of the program is to compile and record the biographies of our members and industry associates, as well as the history of special interest groups and aeromodeling clubs. These records are available to all interested parties, and copies are placed in the museum’s Lee Renaud Memorial Library.

    Steering Committee
The museum steering committee is made up of six individuals who have backgrounds in either model aviation or museum management. The steering committee meets throughout the year to discuss educational programming and museum developments. Brief biographies on each of the steering committee members are below. Doug Holland, Chairman
Doug began building “wind-up” model airplanes at the age of nine. Even though he could not build models during World War II, he kept up-to-date with the latest modeling trends through magazines sent to him by his family. After the war, he flew Control Line and various categories of Free Flight. Today his main interest is Radio Control Electric, though Free Flight is still his first love. In addition to serving as steering committee chairman since the summer of 2000, Doug also is the AMA executive vice president. Jack Frost
    John Hunton
Retired from the CIA, John is an architect by trade. He designed the AMA’s National Aeromodeling Center in Reston, Virginia, in 1981. Later, in 1990, he developed the initial master plan for the Muncie site and designed the existing museum and office building. A lifelong modeler, John has published more than 70 articles on model aviation, 26 of which were in collaboration with Bill Winter. From 1975 to 1981, John was involved with Remotely Piloted Vehicles as an aeromechanical engineer and with the Melpar Division of E-Systems as a test pilot.

    Scott Crossfield
Scott Crossfield joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACAthe predecessor of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration or NASA) at its High Speed Flight Research Station, Edwards, Calif., as a research pilot in June, 1950. During the next five years, he flew the X-1, X-4, X-5, XF-92A, and D-558-I and -II aircraft, accumulating 87 rocket flights in the X-1 and D-558-II aircraft, plus 12 flights in the latter aircraft employing only jet power. He made aeronautical history on November 20, 1953, when he reached the aviation milestone of Mach 2 (twice the speed of sound) or more than 1,320 miles per hour in the D-558-II Skyrocket. Taken aloft in the supersonic, swept-wing research aircraft by a Boeing P2B Superfortress "mother ship" (the Navy designation of the B-29), he dropped clear of the bomber at 32,000 feet and climbed to 72,000 feet before diving to 62,000 feet where he became the first pilot to fly more than twice the speed of sound. His flight was part of a carefully planned program of flight research with the Skyrocket that featured incremental increases in speed while NACA instrumentation recorded the flight data at each increment.

    Robert A. Champine
Robert A. Champine was a research pilot with the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) from December 1947 to 1979, when he retired as Langley Research Center's senior research pilot. He began his career with the NACA at the Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory in Hampton, Virginia (as Langley Research Center was then called). He transferred to the NACA's High-Speed Flight Research Station in the Mojave Desert of California in October 1948, where he flew the X-1 and D-558-I and -II research airplanes. On December 2, 1948, Bob became the 6th man and 3rd civilian to break the mysterious sound barrier. He exceeded Mach 1 on NACA flight 23 checking handling qualities and pressure distribution on the XS-1 #2, after having been dropped from the B-29 mother ship, above the Rogers Dry Lake in California. On August 4, 1949, NACA flight 32, he again exceeded Mach 1 performing rolls, pullups, sideslips, and check of stabilizer effectiveness. This was his 13th and last flight in the XS-1. He flew the first NACA research flight of the D-558-I #3 (Skystreak) on April 22, 1949, and the first NACA research flight of the D-558-II #2 (Skyrocket) on May 24, 1949, beginning the supersonic research program for these aircraft on June l, 1949.
