Who's Who: Herman Goering
Updated - Saturday, 6 November, 2004 It is impossible to consider Hermann Göring (1893-1946, frequently rendered as Herman Goering) as just another flying ace of World War One. His role in instigating and perpetrating the horrors of Naziism in World War Two overwhelms anything else he did earlier in his life. While this article focuses on his WWI experiences, his heinous role in WWII can never be forgotten. Background Hermann Goering was born in Rosenheim, Bavaria, in 1893. His father was a professional soldier who rose to be the first governor of German West Africa (modern-day Namibia, where one of the main streets in the capital is still Goringstrasse). Young Hermann grew up in friends' homes and in military schools while his parents were abroad. (Historians and amateur psycho-analysts have had a field day attributing Göring's adult evil to his childhood without parental love. Of course, Winston Churchill's youth was about the same.) Without question, Göring was an undisciplined and reckless youth, but he fit into the rigid structure of military life. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1912, and was assigned to Alsace where he formed a cyclist corps. By 1915, he was hospitalized for rheumatism; a visit by his friend Bruno Loerzer (a future 41-victory ace) persuaded him to join the air corps.

Henry Sutton : 1856 - 1914 In 1885, Australian Henry Sutton improved on Paul Nipkow 's disk devising what he called his Telephane system - the first real television proposal which involved scanning, synchronising, a light sensitive cell and a control valve (vacuum tube) but no vision signal amplifiers.
Cambridge Biographical Dictionary If you have arrived at this page via the 'Lawrence Hargrave' website you may return to the Aviation Biographies page by clicking HERE Henry Sutton (b. Sept 3, 1856, d. 1914, Ballarat), grew up in the Victorian goldfield town of Ballarat where his father Richard had settled in 1853. "Seeking amusment in his tent at night he set about constructing a concertina, a device invented in England by Charles Wheatstone , the 'father' of the telegraph" This was the beginnings of Sutton's Music Emplorium which traded in Melbourne for over the next 100 years. By the time Henry Sutton was 14... "he had read every book on science and engineering in the library of the Mechanics Institute ...and before reaching 25 had invented a new type of lead storage battery, a torpedo, a colour printing process, telegraph facsimile and a method of using gas and water pipes for signalling. And working in the isolation of Ballarat far from the company of other scientists and technicians, completely ignorant of Thomas Edison 's work, Sutton invented a carbon filement lamp. Sadly Edison had invented the same device just 16 days earlier".

Upon his return to the United States he received an unprecedented welcome, was promoted to colonel, and made a nationwide tour to foster popular interest in aviation. Lindbergh married (1929) Anne Morrow (see below), the daughter of the U.S. ambassador to Mexico Dwight W. Morrow , and with her made several long flights. After the kidnapping and death of their son (see Hauptmann, Bruno Richard ) in 1932, the Lindberghs moved (1935) to England. In 1936, Lindbergh collaborated with Alexis Carrel on the invention of a perfusion pump that could maintain organs outside the body. After inspecting (1938) European air forces, Lindbergh became convinced of German air superiority; he favored a U.S. policy of isolationism with respect to the struggle threatening in Europe. He returned (1939) to the United States and made antiwar speeches for the America First Committee. When these were branded pro-Nazi, he resigned his reserve commission and quit the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. Upon U.S. entry into the war Lindbergh offered his services to the air force; he subsequently flew combat missions in the Pacific. In his later years he emerged as a spokesman on conservation issues.
