Introduction
The technological problems connected with the development of a "wonder searching instrument" are immense. Until science presents us with this instrument we must use classical search devices. At present,, the avalanche dog and the avalanche probe are in most general acceptance. Should the avalanche dog fail, or not be available as is the case in so many localities the victim's chances depend on the effectiveness of a probing operation.
This paper will examine probing methodology and attempt to justify a set of guidelines for the rescue leader to follow.
Each avalanche disaster is unique and ultimately the rescue leader makes certain decisions to maximize the victim's chances of survival within the limitations of a safe and sane operation. Very often the rescue leader must choose between various courses of action; the correct choice is the one which gives the highest probability of finding the victim alive. This choice may not be the same one which will give the highest probability of simply finding the victim - dead or alive. Specifically, three judgement decisions will be discussed. Resolving these three decisions is of intrinsic importance. However, equally important are the possibilities of extending the proposed solutions to related rescue problems. The three specific judgement decisions in question are:

The Wrath of God: Disasters in America
This series examines some of the disasters, natural and man-made, that have had historical significance in America. The results of these disasters have ranged from weather warning systems to fire code regulations, but at a great price. Because of the loss of life and property these disasters caused, steps were taken to reduce and to eliminate the tragedies of similar disasters in the future. Wrath of God: Disasters in America would be useful for classes on American History, Civics, American Culture, Science and Technology, Geography and Safety. It is appropriate for middle school and high school. Avalanches This episode of The Wrath of God examines the deadly power of snow. Delicate crystals that resemble ornaments of white lace, snowflakes can combine under the right circumstances to yield a destructive force that is as deadly as it is beautiful. Avalanches recounts the worst avalanche disaster in America, when a wall of white destroyed an entire train and all its contents, including the passengers. It also takes a look at the miraculous survival of a Colorado man who lived to tell the story of his encounter with the mountain. Discussion Questions
  • Avalanches are cascades of snow that tumble down a mountain under the right conditions. What are some of these conditions? What causes avalanches?

Avalanches What are they? Avalanches are large masses of snow and ice that moves rapidly down the steeper slopes of mountains and hills. (WMO)
An avalanche may be Dry or Wet, according to whether free water is present in the snow. It may be of Loose Snow, when the avalanche starts at a single point, or a Slab Avalanche which occurs when an area of more cohesive snow separates from the surrounding snow and slides out. SAIS How are they formed? Most avalanches start during or after large snowstorms, when the snow is unstable and relatively loose. The four primary triggers are:
  • a steep slope of 25 to 50 degrees heavy snow cover instability from weakness in a layer impact such as stepping or jumping on the snow (WMO)
  • What regions are most vulnerable and why?

    Institution description
    • Preventive avalanche research was initiated in Austria after the Second World War establishing a snow research centre in the Wattener Lizum in Tyrol. Research was then transferred to Obergurgl, located 2000m above sea level. Here methods of high altitude afforestation have been investigated to replace expensive and complicated control construction techniques. In recent years increasing settlement pressure in the inner alpine valleys and the extension of ski areas, including infrastructure, to high altitudes necessitated extraordinary, permanent protection measures against avalanches. This and the rising number of tourism-related avalanches accidents has led to an intensification of avalanche research at the Federal Forest Research Centre (FBVA) in Vienna. In 1985 the avalanche research group was transferred to Innsbruck by establishing an avalanche research institute of the FBVA there. Projects of the FBVA are planned and carried out in close co-operation with the Provincial Divisions of the Austrian Service for Torrent and Avalanche Control.

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
A disaster (from Greek meaning, "bad star") is a natural or man-made event that negatively affects life property , livelihood or industry often resulting in permanent changes to human societies ecosystems and environment . Disasters manifest as hazards exacerbating vulnerable conditions and exceeding individuals' and communities' means to survive and thrive. Most events included herein are compiled from United States Federal Emergency Management Agency and Department of Homeland Security. The word's roots imply that when the stars are in a bad position, a disaster is about to happen. Arancibia landslide-debris avalanche in Costa Rica:
    A disaster announced twice
    By Rolando Mora Chinchilla
Fig. 1 Location of the study area Introduction
Local people were speculating about the possibility of a volcano to develop in the region, and some of them also heard some underground sounds and saw smoke columns. Actually, the sounds were the landslides at the moment of being triggered and the smoke was the dust generated by the rocks being crushed during their travel down hill (fig. 2).
Fig. 2 Dust clouds generated by the crushing rocks. Bajo Caliente is a village located where the Veracruz River joins Aranjuez River with a population that rounds 300 people. Considering that this village is located 4 m above the bottom of Aranjuez riverbed and having this river a very mismanaged upper catchment, the hazard of an avalanche that could affect the village was a major concern. After 1988 the authorities took no action, people continued to live and work on the land in Las Lagunas de Arancibia. In October the 30th 1993 at noon, a translational slide of 2.9 millions of m3 was triggered and its debris avalanche covered an area of 17.7 Ha (Fig. 3). The run out length of the avalanche was 850 m (Fig. 3). The slide was preceded by a period of intense rainfall, but when the material moved down, the rain had stopped 12 hours before.

    Snowstruck:
    In the Grip of
    Avalanches

    Jill Fredston
(Harcourt) Do you remember our first snowfall? You woke up and you knew by the silence that something was going on and you looked out the window and everything was upside-down: the dark earth has gone white, the bright morning sky has turned dark and menacing, the trees holding fragments of the sky on their branches. Above all, it was the silence of it all, you said: the sifting of the heavens, coming down, coming down, almost menacing in its gentleness. And there is menace. Which is exactly why Jill Fredston has spent years studying avalanches and their aftermath. She and her husband Doug Fesler might be called "The Powder Blast Kids." They were so mad for snow and ice that they moved to Alaska to study, learn, understand - and then to teach - the secrets of snow, its slides, and its ability to decimate cars, and houses, and railroads, and roads, and power-lines, and people. They've spent the last thirty years making themselves experts. And it is hard not to get caught up in their enthusiasm, even though some of us wouldn't be caught dead in Alaska. The mortality rate of avalanches in this country - two hundred people die every year - is paltry when compared to those who die in their cars or in a bar-room brawl or choking on lobster (one of my old friends did that) or even falling and bonking their heads in their own bathrooms. Still, the figures should be even less, says the author.
