CURRENT PICK OF THE MONTH LAST UPDATED: 1/10/2005 "The WINTERNATIONALS of 409" by James Ibusuki Those three magical numbers roll off the tongue so easily they inspired a hit song and popular kitchen cleanser: "Four-Oh-Nine." But they were also the hottest stockers on the drag strip in 1962! James Ibusuki's newest painting transforms black and white memories back into 'exciting living color' as Dave Strickler challenges "Dyno Don" Nicholson for "Mr. Stock Eliminator!" Although Dyno defended his '61Pomona title, both racers went on to become huge drag racing legends. In fact, by winning the first two Winternationals Nicholson became an instant bankable touring pro. He quit his 'day gig' at Service Chevrolet in Pasadena, California and went on tour back East. Dave Strickler also went pro and maintained his reputation as the hottest stocker pilot in the East. And yes, the "Bill Jenkins" listed as tuner on Strickler's Old Reliable II is the same renown "Grumpy" who would go solo in '65, initially as a Plymouth racer and then permanently back to Chevrolet with his first "Grumpy's Toy," a little red L79 '66 Nova! Some race fans may not recognize the historical Pomona Raceway depicted in Ibusuki's painting. The famous Winternationals banner, guardrails, Christmas tree, and timing tower have yet to be erected! But yes, as with all of his works, the artist has faithfully reproduced the quarter mile setting back to vintage '62 specs.
