Drivers actually bought brand-new cars from dealers and went racing. The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing NASCAR ), organized in 1947, created a standardized set of rules for stock-car racing and established a system for selecting a national champion based on performance at races across the country. The unmodified cars were not tough enough for this type of abuse, so NASCAR began allowing modifications to the stock cars to increase their durability. Over the years, more and more modifications were made, sometimes to increase safety (see How NASCAR Safety Works for details) and sometimes to improve competition. NASCAR strictly controls all of these modifications, which are spelled out in detail in the NASCAR rule book. Cars are checked for compliance with these rules at every race.

Our History OUR TEAM Tony Novotny founded the Canadian Association for Stock Car Auto Racing in 1981. Prior to CASCAR there was no professional touring series in Canada, and late model racing was fragmented throughout race tracks across the country. Given the nature of man, his relationship with machines and the need to compete, a competitive look from that guy in the black Model T was probably all it took to leave that first light in the dust. NASCAR racing's popularity is evident nearly everywhere these days. You can't drive down the road without seeing at least one car covered in stickers evidencing loyalty to NASCAR in general, or favorite drivers, like Jeff Gordon, in particular. Turn on ABC or ESPN and you're likely to find more than one race on at any given time. You won't be the only one watching, either; last year, more than 250 million watched the sport on television. The city also failed to provide Emerson Fittipaldi, the 1989 CART champion and current race co-promoter, with access to the racetrack which prevented him and his team from preparing for the race. Losing out on a race in the huge Brazilian market is a big setback for CART both financially and otherwise. CART has been racing in Rio since 1996, and nearly one-third of CART's 31 drivers are Brazilian, including reigning champion Gil de Ferran. The cancellation of the race caused analysts of CART's stock to slash its first-quarter earnings by as much as 23%. Not only will CART not receive its $3-million sanction fee, but Fittipaldi's $1.8-million debt to the series could also be in doubt because the race will not take place. "This is a great embarrassment for all of Brazil," says Fittipaldi.
