Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. From 1996 to 1997, J. Curtis Pendergrass, PhD, did some experiments in my research laboratory at the University of Kentucky that confirmed the toxicity of thimerosal in vaccines. The results appeared on our website (www.altcorp.com), where they attracted the attention of some parents of autistic children. These parents informed me that increased mandatory vaccination of infants was, in their opinion, the cause of an apparent epidemic of autism. This was the first time I had heard of this situation. The rationale for considering vaccinations as the cause of their children's problems seemed sensible and worth an investigation. I would like to state here that I am a very strong supporter of the national vaccine program, and that nothing in this article should be construed to imply that parents should avoid getting their children vaccinated. But I do recommend avoiding vaccines that contain thimerosal.

SACRAMENTO, California (CNN) Russell Rollens was a picture-perfect baby. Then at 15 months just like every other baby he got his measles, mumps and rubella vaccination, or MMR. "He had a physical reaction to those vaccines, including a high-pitched scream and days of high pitched crying and listlessness," said Russell's father, Rick Rollens. Ten years later, those problems continue. Russell is now autistic. How does one describe what it's like parenting an autistic child? "It's a living hell," said Rollens. "For my son who suffers from the disorder, for our family members and everyone who knows and loves Russel. It's a constant struggle." And it's a struggle that most autistic kids also go through in the classroom, like the one at ABC School for Autistic Children in Sacramento where classes are full.

What is autism? Autism, also called autistic disorder, appears in early childhood, usually before age 3 (National Institutes of Health, 2001). Autism prevents children and adolescents from interacting normally with other people and affects almost every aspect of their social and psychological development. Back to Top What are the signs of autism? Autism has a wide variety of characteristics ranging in intensity from mild to severe. One child with autism does not behave like another child with the same diagnosis. Children and adolescents with autism typically:
  • Have difficulty communicating with others.
  • Exhibit repetitious behaviors, such as rocking back and forth, head banging, or touching or twirling objects.
  • Have a limited range of interests and activities.

Story Tools RELATED Link between Autism and vaccines? California's autism mystery deepens Autism information Cure Autism Now Foundation ... Autism Society of America WHAT CAUSES AUTISM? No one knows exactly what causes Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), but scientists think that both genetic and environmental factors may play a role. We do know that parents do not cause ASDs in their children.
There is no known cure for ASDs. However, early and intensive education can help children grow and learn new skills. The goal of these programs is to reduce the symptoms of an ASD in a child. Medicines may relieve symptoms and be helpful for some children.

92. The Seattle Times: Health: Panel Finds No Credible Link Between Vaccines, Autism
The Institute of Medicine, an influential adviser of the government on scientific matters, said yesterday there is no credible evidence that either the measlesmumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine or vaccines containing the preservative thimerosal cause autism.

Panel finds no credible link between vaccines, autism By David Brown
The Washington Post E-mail this article Print this article Search archive Most e-mailed articles The conclusion came in an 81-page report requested by two federal agencies to address the doubts raised about the safety of childhood vaccines. The 14-person panel urged more research on autism, but said further pursuit of possible links between vaccines and the neurological disorder probably is not worth the money or effort. Critics said the final proof may come if autism diagnoses drop now that thimerosal has been virtually eliminated in routine childhood vaccines. Autism is a complex developmental disorder best known for impairing a child's ability to communicate and interact with others. Recent data suggest a tenfold increase in autism rates in the past decade, although it's unclear how much of the apparent surge reflects better diagnosis. Reports published in 2001 by the Institute of Medicine found no connection between the MMR vaccine and autism, and insufficient evidence to draw conclusions about thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative added to multiple-dose vials of vaccine. Since then, enough new studies have been published to reject both theories, the panel said.

more About Autism Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are a group of developmental disabilities that are caused by an abnormality in the brain. People with ASDs tend to have problems with social and communication skills. They also are likely to repeat certain behaviors and to not want change in their daily activities. Many people with ASDs also have unusual ways of learning, paying attention, or reacting to different sensations. ASDs begin during childhood and last throughout a person's life. The following question and answer section will help you learn more about ASDs. What are some of the symptoms of ASDs? As the name "autism spectrum disorder" says, ASDs cover a wide range of behaviors and abilities. People who have ASDs, like all people, differ greatly in the way they act and what they can do. No two people with ASDs will have the same symptoms. A symptom might be mild in one person and severe in another person. Some examples of the types of problems and behaviors a child or adult with an ASD might have follow.

Searching for reasons why: a mother's report on autism - Health
Mothering , Nov-Dec, 2002 by Lyn Redwood Will was the perfect baby. He ate and slept well, played, walked, and talked, alt by one year. Shortly after his first birthday, however, things changed dramatically. He developed multiple infections, including strep throat, rotavirus, and an upper respiratory infection, the latter requiring hospitalization. It was at this time that he began to regress. He lost speech, interaction, and eye contact. Although he was often in his own little world, he remained very affectionate and loving. Will was evaluated for his unexplained regression with an MRI, sleep study EEG, ABR (brainstem evoked hearing test), and chromosome studies. He even had tympanostomy tubes inserted in his eardrums, all without any answers or improvement. When I asked one doctor what to do next, he said, "Why don't you just take your son fishing?" Well, I took his advice and went fishingfishing to find some answers to what had happened to my perfectly normal son, what had taken him away. Until one day I felt as if I finally had a bite on the line.

    Parents reassured on vaccine

MMR vaccination can prevent disabling and even fatal diseases
Medical researchers have given parents the strongest reassurance yet that the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine will not cause their children to develop autism. And they emphasised that there is no link between bowel disease and the jab. The BBC's Fergus Walsh: "Two major studies have ruled out any link with autism or bowel disease" Experts have also warned if confidence in the vaccine, known as MMR, does not return, new epidemics of childhood diseases could break out in as little as three years. Two new studies published in "The Lancet" on Friday show there is no link between the introduction of the vaccine and the sharp rise in autism diagnosed in children. Doctors and government health experts are now hoping the new findings will convince parents who have shunned the jabs that they are safe. 'Mothers must trust MMR' Professor Brent Taylor, of the Royal Free Medical School in north London, which carried out the research, said it was important mothers began to trust MMR again.

Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD)
What are the autistic spectrum disorders?
Autism spectrum disorders are also called Pervasive Developmental disorders , because they involve delay in many areas of development. They include Autistic Disorder Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS) Asperger Syndrome , and Rett Syndrome . PDD is really just a category that includes many different areas of developmental delay, of differing severities What is autism or autistic disorder?
Autism is the most severe of the PDDs. People with autism have differences in the development of their thinking, language, behavior and social skills. The differences appear before age three, and can be diagnosed by 18 months. To be considered autistic, a child must have a certain number of symptoms in the areas of social interaction, communication (meaning a language delay ), and a restricted range of behaviors, activities and interests (often called stereotypic behaviors). If you think your child may have these traits, see a specialist right away. Read on to find out more.
