Autism Spectrum Disorders (Pervasive Developmental Disorders)
Not until the middle of the twentieth century was there a name for a disorder that now appears to affect an estimated one of every five hundred children, a disorder that causes disruption in families and unfulfilled lives for many children. In 1943 Dr. Leo Kanner of the Johns Hopkins Hospital studied a group of 11 children and introduced the label early infantile autism into the English language. At the same time a German scientist, Dr. Hans Asperger, described a milder form of the disorder that became known as Asperger syndrome. Thus these two disorders were described and are today listed in the

Autism Overview
Autism is a complex disorder of the central nervous system that has 3 defining core features: problems with social interactions, impaired verbal and nonverbal communication, and a pattern of repetitive behavior with narrow, restricted interests. A number of other associated symptoms frequently coexist with autism. Most people with autism have problems using language, forming relationships, and appropriately interpreting and responding to the external world around them. Autism is a behaviorally defined neurodevelopmental disorder that begins in early childhood. Although the diagnosis of autism may not be made until a child reaches preschool or school age, the signs and symptoms of autism may be apparent by the time the child is aged 12-18 months, and the behavioral characteristics of autism are almost always evident by the time the child is aged 3 years. Language delay in the preschool years (younger than 5 years) is typically the presenting problem for more severely affected children with autism. Higher functioning children with autism are generally identified with behavioral problems when they are aged approximately 4-5 years or with social problems later in childhood. Autism persists throughout the person's lifetime, although many people are able to learn to control and modify their behavior to some extent. Autism is classified by the American Psychiatric Association as one of a group of disorders known as the pervasive development disorders (PDD). In addition to autistic disorder, the pervasive developmental disorders include Asperger syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, Rett disorder, and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (PDD NOS).

Description of Autism
Autism is a condition in which children are unable to develop normal relationships with others. It is diagnosed by the presence of characteristic disturbances in development. About 4 of every 10,000 children are autistic, and 2 per 10,000 have some form of pervasive developmental disorder (PDD). PDD means that some, but not all, symptoms of autism are present. Digital Talk Central Autism Not Linked To MMR Childhood Vaccination September 09, 2004 Parents worried by the media coverage of a possible link between MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccination and autism can relax. A major new study has concluded MMR vaccination is not associated with increased risk of autism. The study, co-authored by Dr. Eric Fombonne, Director of the Department of Psychiatry at the Montreal Children's Hospital of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) will be published in the September 11 edition of The Lancet, one of the world's leading medical journals. Worries over a possible link between MMR vaccination and pervasive developmental disorders (PDDs) such as autism have led to a decrease in the number of children receiving the vaccination. PDDs are a range of disorders including autism and Asperger's syndrome. Symptoms include abnormalities in language development, communications and social skills, and repetitive behaviours.

Access to Specialty Medical Care for Children With Mental Retardation, Autism, and Other Special Health Care Needs http://www.aamr.org/Reading_Room/pdf/MR_Oct03article.pdf Results from a national survey indicate that over a third of the children with autism, over a fifth with mental retardation, and over a fifth with other types of special health care needs had problems obtaining needed care from specialty doctors in the preceding year. The most common problems included getting referrals and finding providers with appropriate training. Children with unstable health conditions, autism, or those whose parent was in poor health were at greater risk for problems. Incurable? Well, now that is an interesting question...
Recovery is such a relative term. We all hope for our kids to recover and live the most independent life possible. As I have said before, "to be the best autistic person they can be." But this is something that proves the difference parents can make. And they did it before it was "fashionable" to be involved. This man, 32 years-old, is making a big difference in, and to, the autism community.

No link found between MMR vaccine and autism
WASHINGTON (CNN) A new report finds no link between the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine and autistic spectrum disorders (ASD), frequently referred to as autism. The update, "Immunization Safety Review: Measles-Mumps-Rubella Vaccine and Autism," was prepared by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Safety Review Committee. The panel concluded that there was no epidemiological evidence of a relationship at the population level between the MMR vaccine and ASD, but added that it does not exclude the possibility that the MMR vaccine could contribute to autism in a small number of children. "The responsibility of the government to ensure the safety of the MMR vaccine is high, even if the adverse outcome is rare," the committee noted. The MMR vaccine actually three vaccines in a single shot has been very successful in eliminating measles, mumps and rubella in the United States. However, the disease remains a serious threat elsewhere in the world where children are not vaccinated. According to the report, more than one million children died from measles last year worldwide.
