(William T. Adams) (1822 - 1897)
Massachusetts William T. Adams assumed the pen name "Oliver Optic" when he began writing children's books in the 1850s. A teacher by trade, Adams gained fame and fortune during his lifetime from the publication of numerous "boy adventure stories." John Townsend Trowbridge
New York Beginning his career as a newspaper editor and anonymous contributor to various publications, Trowbridge first earned a name for himself upon publication of an anti-slavery novel. He wrote articles for the children's magazines Our Young Folks and Youth's Companion during and after the war. Of his Civil War novels, Cudjo's Cave was the most popular. According to the new introduction to a recent edition of the novel, Trowbridge was the first American novelist to depict a black man of pure African ancestry as noble and intelligent. Modern critics, however, label the character Pomp a stereotype. Jules Verne
France Fantasy writer Jules Verne is famous for his adventure stories; three in particular have contributed significantly to the genre of science fiction and remain popular today:

Galt MacDermot, Composer Galt MacDermot is best known for his music in HAIR , and his Tony Award Winning score to Two Gentlemen of Verona . His most recent show, Time and Wind , played at the John Houseman Studio Theatre in New York City to sold-out crowds, and is being recorded on CD. MacDermot's work spans the gamut of performing arts, creating a rich tapestry of musicals (The Human Comedy, Steel), ballet scores (Salome), film scores (Cotton Comes To Harlem, Fortune and Mans Eyes, Mistress), chamber music (Wind Quintet), the Anglican Liturgy , poetry (Thomas Hardy) and drama accompaniments ("The Sun Always Shines For The Cool," "The Shooting of Dan McGrew") and band repertory. He draws inspiration from a wealth of musical scores, crossing the boundaries of jazz, folk, gospel, reggae, and classical styles. MacDermot's background is as uniquely diverse as his music. The son of a Canadian diplomat, he was born and raised in Montreal. After attending Bishop's University, he received a more extensive musical education at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and then moved to New York in 1964. Three years later, MacDermot wrote the music for the landmark Broadway production, HAIR , which he later adapted for the screen.
