The three authors of Discovering Advanced Algebra, Jerald Murdock, Ellen Kamischke, and Eric Kamischke, have worked together at the Interlochen Center for the Arts, Interlochen, Michigan, to develop technology-enabled curricula for over a decade. They coauthored Discovering Algebra: An Investigative Approach and have worked with teachers across the country at conferences and professional workshops. Jerald Murdock: Presidential Awardee for Excellence in Mathematics Teaching, past president of the Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, Murdock has completed a 40-year teaching career in the public schools and at the Interlochen Arts Academy. Author Biographies
Lansing Prescott is Professor of Biology and chair of the department at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Dr. Prescott received his B.A. and M.A. in biology from Rice University and his Ph.D. in biochemistry from Brandeis University. He served as a visiting lecturer at the University of Georgia in 1980. Dr. Prescott's research interests are the properties of bacterial aspartate transcarbamylases (particularly those from Bacillus stearothermophilus and B. psychrophilus and the effect of toxicants on diatom morphology and physiology.
As is the case in small, liberal arts colleges, one of Dr. Prescott's primary responsibilities is teaching undergraduates. He has taught courses in Introductory Microbiology for nursing and allied health students, General Microbiology for majors, Cell Biology, Biological Chemistry, Immunology, Human Physiology, and Parasitology. In 1989, he received a faculty achievement award for excellence in teaching. When he is not engaged in academic pursuits, Dr. Prescott enjoys listening to music, playing golf and chess, and reading both fiction and nonfiction.
Dr. Prescott's commitment to writing is long-standing. Besides his involvement in

Judge Owen Lee Kwong is presently assigned to the Alternate Dispute Resolution Department of the Los Angeles Superior Court. Previously, he was assigned to a direct calendar fast-track civil trial court. He has presided over civil, criminal, delinquency, dependency, and probate proceedings and has sat on assignment (pro tem) on the Court of Appeal. Judge Kwong was appointed in April 1989 to the Los Angeles Municipal Court by Governor Deukmejian and elevated in January 1993 to the Los Angeles Superior Court by Governor Wilson. He was the Supervising Judge for the central arraignment courts, Los Angeles Municipal Court and Supervising Judge for the East District Juvenile Court, Los Angeles Superior Court. Judge Kwong worked as a Deputy Attorney General, California Department of Justice, as a Supervising Deputy, Antitrust Section, as an acting Assistant Attorney General for various periods, and as a Special Assistant to the U.S. Attorney in antitrust matters. He is admitted to the California Bar, numerous Bars of the Federal District Court, Federal Courts of Appeal, and the United States Supreme Court. Currently licensed as a pharmacist, Judge Kwong worked as a pharmacist, including supervising pharmacist, at the University of California Medical Center and as Interim chief pharmacist for Kaiser Permanente, Sacramento, California. He received his law degree from School of Law, University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and his pharmacy degree from the University of Utah.

Following graduation from law school, Mr. Curry served as a briefing attorney for the Supreme Court of Texas . He was then appointed an Assistant Attorney General of Texas in the Consumer Protection and Antitrust Division until he entered private practice in 1979. Mr. Curry has served as Chairman of the State Bar of Texas Consumer Law Section, and as an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Texas School of Law since 1985. Mr. Curry was. the Editor of Texas Consumer Litigation (2nd Edition), has authored numerous law review and continuing legal education articles on subjects related to deceptive trade practices, Insurance Code litigation, negotiation and ADR. Mr. Curry, a full-time professional mediator, has mediated approximately four hundred cases across the State, including complex personal injury, construction, DTPA, malpractice, insurance, employment and regulatory disputes. He is a member of the Association of Attorney Mediators and the Society of Professionals in Dispute Resolution . Marco Mongillo (M.D.) is at present completing his Ph.D. in cell biology in the laboratory of Professor Pozzan and his interests are focused primarily on the characterization of fluorescent probes for the measurement of Ca and cAMP in vivo and the crosstalk between these second messengers. Rosario Rizzuto (M.D., Ph.D.) is Professor of General Pathology at the University of Ferrara. He has pioneered the use of molecular biology for the development of new tools to study Ca homeostasis at the subcellular level. His present interests are primarily concerned with the mechanism and role of mitochondrial Ca homeostasis. Tullio Pozzan (M.D.) is Professor of General Pathology at the University of Padova, Italy, and Department Chairman and Vice Scientific Director of the Venetian Institute of Molecular Medicine in Padova. He has collaborated with R.Y. Tsien and T.J. Rink in the development of fluorescent Ca indicators and, in collaboration with R. Rizzuto, has developed chimeric aequorins that are targeted to cellular organelles.

Project Synopsis Author Biographies Selected Bibliography Links Author Biographies joined the MIT Security Studies Program this year as an Associate Director. Recently Assistant Director of the International Security Program at Harvard’s Center for Science and International Affairs, Owen remains co-editor of the Center’s journal, International Security , and Adjunct Lecturer at the Kennedy School of Government. He received his PhD from MIT, where he specialized in U.S. defense policy and international security affairs. His dissertation, which he is now revising for publication, analyzed the sources of innovative military doctrine, using cases that compared U.S. Navy responses to different Cold War nuclear vulnerability crises. He has written on nuclear force structure issues, the politics of strategic mobility, and was a key participant and author in CSIA’s collaborative book projects on nuclear weapons in the former Soviet Union, including Soviet Nuclear Fission Cooperative Denuclearization , and Avoiding Nuclear Anarchy After graduating from Harvard College and before returning to graduate school, he worked at the Hudson Institute.
