Half a year of my life in Schloss Mittersill Since July 1998 until beginning of January 1999 I had been lived and studied in Schloss Mittersill , a beautiful castle in little town Mittersill in Western Austria mountains. I am a Christian and God means a lot in my life.I was enrolled as resident student (or sojourner) at Schloss Mittersill Study Center and attended a few courses in theology and Christian studies here. I lived together with Alfredo from Spain. He was a volunteer in Schloss for 3 months, like most of young people are there (they are coming from different countries of Europe and America for three months or for haf a year. My girlfriend Maria was in Italy then and came to visit me a few times in Schloss and I went to Italy from Mittersill once to visit her in Forli. I have very nice memories of Schloss and often I miss the beauty of Austrian Alps and

    CALL FOR PAPERS
    Annual International Symposium
on Modern Austrian Literature and Culture
    April 20-23, 2006
Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, North Carolina
    Topic
Illness, Madness and Criminality in Austrian Literature and Culture:
    Borders of a Different Sort
This conference will explore Austria's confrontation with human experience beyond the borders of cultural norms. The topic seeks to explore the intersections between fiction, medicine, psychiatry and law, and the implications of these intersections for understanding Austrian history, politics and culture. Interdisciplinary approaches to literature as well as submissions from colleagues in related fields are welcome.
    • How are madness, illness and criminality depicted in Austrian literature and film? One might focus on either fictional figures, on representations of medical or legal institutions such as asylums, hospitals, courts, or on authors themselves. How are these categories used as metaphors or allegories for Austrian history, culture and identity? In what ways has the treatment of these marginal categories contributed to an understanding or definition of majority norms and identities?

Arnie's grasp of Austrian history questioned
Last Updated Fri, 03 Sep 2004 13:04:01 EDT CBC Arts VIENNA - While he has been a success as a bodybuilder, action star and politician, Arnold Schwarzenegger is a failure as a historian. That's according to some people in Austria, his former homeland, who are calling into question the picture of his boyhood that Schwarzenegger painted when he addressed the Republican National Convention in New York. Arnold Schwarzenegger addresses Republicans on Tuesday. (AP photo) Schwarzenegger, star of such films as Conan The Barbarian and The Terminator , told delegates on Tuesday that he recalled seeing Soviet tanks and that the country was dominated by socialists. "I saw tanks in the streets. I saw communism with my own eyes," Schwarzenegger said in a speech that was lauded by many observers as the highlight of the gathering. But those who have studied the history of Austria say that would have been impossible.

John Rath, the Austrian History Yearbook remains the only English-language journal devoted to the history of the territories in Central Europe that were formerly under Habsburg rule and now comprise the modern states of Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, Croatia, and parts of Italy, Poland, Ukraine, and Romania. The collapse of the Soviet Union and the search for stability in the former East bloc has brought an upsurge of interest in the region's Habsburg heritage. Typically, each issue of the Yearbook contains five to six fully peer-reviewed articles, a forum on an important historical issue, a review article, and 25 to 30 book reviews. Two recent articles have won prestigious prizes awarded by affiliate societies of the American Historical Association.

History Today's Republic of Austria is a small state, whose origins can be traced far back into history. Populated since prehistoric times, Austria's location in the heart of Europe means that it has had its share of the continent's historical developments. It evolved from a border region into a powerful empire and multiracial state, which collapsed at the end of the First World War. In 1918, the small, newly-proclaimed Republic of Austria had at first to come to terms with its European environment. Austria emerged from the Second World War and the sufferings associated with it as a state that feels secure in its existence and which plays a decisive role in Europe.
