End of the Kreisky Era
During Kreisky's tenure as chancellor, Austria enjoyed unprecedented prosperity, but by the time the April 1983 election approached, the SPÖ had few fresh ideas with which to attract critical swing voters. Its image also suffered from various political and financial scandals (see Political Developments since 1983 , ch. 4). Its proposal for a tax hike aimed at upper-income Austrians to finance job creation was countered by the ÖVP with promises of no new taxes and more careful use of existing government tax revenues. Although the ÖVP failed to unseat the SPÖ as the largest party in the Nationalrat, the ÖVP benefited from a significant shift in voter sentiment, and the SPÖ lost its majority, winning ninety seats, which was five seats fewer than in 1979. The ÖVP gained four seats for a total of eighty-one. The FPÖ won an additional seat, for a total of twelve, despite a decline in its share of the vote. Two "green" parties, the United Greens of Austria (Vereinigte Grüne ÖsterreichsVGÖ) and the Alternative List of Austria (Alternative Liste ÖsterreichsALÖ), sought to rally voters on environmental issues. Together they took about 3.3 percent of the vote but won no parliamentary seats. Kreisky had campaigned strongly for an absolute majority and resigned rather than lead a coalition government. His minister of education, Fred Sinowatz, became chancellor in 1983, heading an SPÖ-FPÖ coalition. Kreisky's departure marked a major turning point in Austria's postwar history, and the Sinowatz government was to be a transitional phase into the contemporary era.

Map History Political System ... Private The Alpine lands and the fertile plains of the Danube Region were settled in prehistoric times. The existence of rich mineral resources - most notably salt and iron - gave rise to a prosperous Celtic culture which established itself as a major trading partner of the neighbouring Roman territories during the first century BC. Around the birth of Christ this region, known as the kingdom of Noricum, was conquered and subsequently incorporated in the conglomerate Roman Empire and became a Roman province - along with Rhaetia (western Austria), which the Romans subdued at the same time, and Pannonia (western Lower Austria and Burgenland). The Romans held sway in the Danube region for almost five hundred years. When they finally gave way to the onslaught of the tribal migrations and withdrew from the Danube, they left behind them several once-thriving cities.
Up to the late eighth century the area of present-day Austria was repeatedly crossed by waves of migrating peoples. The German tribes crossed the Danube on their way south, while the Huns with their hordes of horseback warriors swept eastwards as far as France. Later the Avars settled in eastern Austria, and the Bavarians edged their way down the Danube. Pockets of Slav settlers lived in the north of Lower Austria, in Carinthia and in southern Styria. Towards the end of the eighth century Charlemagne established the Carolingian Mark between the Danube and the Drau as a bulwark against further encroachments of the Avars. Since the departure of the Romans, Irish and Scottish monks had progressively christianised the Alpine region.

Negotiated Settlement: The Counter-Reformation in the Habsburg Province of Upper Austria . Brill. Studies in Central European Histories The changes associated with reformed Catholicism in the decades around 1600, and how they affected men and women, can only be understood by looking at the interactions between politics and social and religious requirements on a local level.
This study, first of all, sketches the Austrian rural territory that will be analyzed. Next, the local administrative disputes are outlined. The third chapter looks closely at one monastery estate, while chapter four details the administrators responsible for the implementation of policies. The concluding chapter concentrates on the experiences of women.
Religious, cultural, and women's historians, interested in rural social transformations in the early modern period, will find this an important book. The political landscape, which stretched from the Council of Trent to the bodies of pregnant girls, proved to be exceedingly complex. This local study of the Counter-Reformation makes use of a variety of previously unexamined, archival sources. Amazons to Fighter Pilots
A Biographical Dictionary of Military Women
2 Volumes Reina Pennington
Foreword by Gerhard Weinberg
Description:
In 1942, during the battle of Stalingrad, fighter pilot Liliia Litviak became the first woman to shoot down an enemy aircraft. In the 1850s, Lakshmi Bai, a horsewoman, good shot, and Rani of the Indian principality of Jhansi, rallied her subjects and defended the principality against a British siege. From antiquity to the present, thousands of women have served in the military as soldiers, sailors, physicians, and pilots, yet their stories have been hidden from history. This book tells their stories, with particular focus on women who fought.

AUSTRIAN GREETINGS
or
How Not to Be a Good Guest. Satire
by Gerhard GELBMANN During its gorgeous history Austria has developed some quite gorgeous manners, some of them remarkable specialities which might differ from any other culture's basic customs in any respect. But it is not our intention to discuss an average Austrian's level of tolerance or Austrian ideals of harmonic integration well proven in former times when of the reigning dynasty, the Habsburgs, ran the word that they would rather marry than lead a war (of course, only an ideal, in fact the Habsburgs way of living led to more wars than marriages). These Austrian ideals have paled a little bit nowadays - harmony as well as the gorgeousness of former days have vanished into the haze of classics. What has been left? Well, the way to behave like still having gorgeous times, we can state by observing every day life built up by manners in use in Austria. Maybe the first impression a foreigner can get is this once-so-gorgeous-but-still-in-use way how Austrians greet each other and how they expect you as a foreigner to behave Austrian-like: If you happen to meet with friends or near acquaintances you are fond of you under all circumstances have to shake hands (in addition with greeting by using one of the two phrases explained above!) - and don't forget to repeat this gorgeous gesture when you are parting and wish each other "Auf Wiedersehen" (what is simply nothing but saying good bye and means that you wait to see each other again). Of course, on telephone hand-shakes have to be omitted, yet it still can be heard that Austrians say "Auf Wiedersehen" to each other on phone, although they cannot see each other. This is rather phoney, indeed (and has nothing to do with gorgeous Austrian History, telephone was invented after the phrase for saying farewell had been traditionally functionalized).

Historians criticize Schwarzenegger for Austrian history gaffes
By Roland Prinz
ASSOCIATED PRESS 7:46 a.m. September 3, 2004 VIENNA, Austria – Austrian historians are ridiculing California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for telling the Republican National Convention that he saw Soviet tanks in his homeland as a child and left a "Socialist" country when he moved away in 1968. Recalling that the Soviets once occupied part of Austria in the aftermath of World War II, Schwarzenegger told the convention on Tuesday: "I saw tanks in the streets. I saw communism with my own eyes." "It's a fact – as a child he could not have seen a Soviet tank in Styria," the southeastern province where Schwarzenegger was born and raised, historian Stefan Karner told the Vienna newspaper Kurier. Schwarzenegger, now a naturalized U.S. citizen, was born on July 30, 1947, when Styria and the neighboring province of Carinthia belonged to the British zone. At the time, postwar Austria was occupied by the four wartime allies, which also included the United States, the Soviet Union and France.
