    A USTRIAN H ISTORY
    by Claire Antoszewski
    Early History
    House of Babenberg
By 1156 Austria had become a duchy under the Babenbergs and flourished both economically and culturally. During the House of Babenberg (976-1246) the foundations of Melk, Göttweig, Klosterneuberg and other famous sites were layed. In 1278, the Bohemian King Ottokar, who had imposed his rule after the last of the Babenbergs, Frederick the Warrior, was killed, was defeated by Rudolph I of Habsburg who had become King of Germany in 1273. So began the Habsburg rule of Austria which continued until 1918.
    Habsburg Dynasty
War with France broke out in 1792 and continued sporadically until 1815. One of the results of the Napoleonic Wars was the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire, whose crown had been in the Hapsburg family for nearly 4 centuries. In October 1814, 215 European heads of state met in Vienna to figure out a balance of power after the collapse of the Napoleonic Empire. What came to be known as the Vienna Congress, lasted nine months and not a shilling was spared on entertaining the guests.
    Emperor Franz Joseph I
    World War I and II
In the assassination of Ferdinand and its repercutions, Europe found its excuse to wage the war which had been brewing for some time. World War I was the end of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Under the peace settlement of 1919, the Treaty of Saint-Germain, the new Austrian state emerged with a population of only 7 million and was geographically the size it is today. The loss of so much territory and therefore economic prosperity combined with political tensions eventually left space for the outlawed Nazis to take over Austria. In 1938, Austrian born Adolf Hitler annexed Austria. Austria, as a part of German Third Reich, fought with the Axis in World War II and Vienna suffered heavy Allied bombing. Austria´s involvement in the Holocaust is a sad and painful chapter of history and one which is still being unravelled.

    Alphabetical
Recent Up a category A Short History of Austria-Hungary and Poland The Encyclopaedia Britannica originally published this detailed examination in 1914. The text is still interesting, despite being hugely out of date, because it reflects the views and attitudes of a time when the Austro-Hungarian Empire still existed. Austrian History 'Historical facts about our country' is a quick dash through Austria's past, but without any paragraphing or line breaks it can be laborious reading. Austrian History This detailed narrative of Austrian history includes details on political and religious policies, economics and social trends; it is subdivided, enabling easier reference. The style is clear and nicely written.

    History of Austria
    Early Austrian History
The Alpine countryside and the fertile plains of the Danube Region were already settled in prehistoric times. As early as the first century AD, the local Celtic population gained prosperity and became a major trading partner of the neighbouring Roman Empire due to rich mineral resources, most notably salt and iron. Around the time of the birth of Jesus Christ, the Romans conquered and incorporated this region in the kingdom of Noricum, into the Roman Empire. Thus, Noricum suffered the same fate as Rhaetia (western Austria) and Pannonia (eastern Lower Austria and Burgenland), which were subdued by the Romans at the same time. The Romans ruled the Danube region and built numerous settlements for almost five hundred years. The Romans gave way under the pressure of the migration of the Germanic tribes and withdrew from the Danube, thereby leaving behind thriving cities, such as Carnuntum in Pannonia.

Generally speaking the theme of the seminar alternates each year. The purpose of the seminar is to introduce students to aspects of method, historical and historiographical problems, and critical interpretation of sources, and results in the writing of an original and professional-level research paper by the end of the winter quarter. Other courses in the field are offered each year in accordance with faculty research and expertise. Recent course offerings have included the European survey course (1648 to the present), The French Revolution, German History and Historiography, Austrian History (1740-1955), Nineteenth-Century French Politics and Culture, Vienna 1900, Marx, Catastrophic Nationalism, and Jewish Life in France and Germany. Students are also required to take some courses outside the department. The term Habsburg Empire is to be understood as the complex of territories ruled by the Habsburg Dynasty. As such, it has been phrased by modern historians and does not appear in historical documents; it is not to be confused with the Holy Roman Empire , often simply referred to as the Empire , in which the influence of the Habsburg Emperors was rather limited.
In 1806 the Holy Roman Empire was dissolved and Francis I. assumed the title "Emperor of Austria" which was applied to the entirety of his territorial possessions. Since the Compromise of 1867, the expression "Austria-Hungary" was used; the files listed below, from 1867 on, for domestic policy, the economy and intellectual life, refer to the Austrian half of Austria-Hungary, also referred to as Cisleithania.
