    Policy scenario
    1. General description of the political support for digitisation (and national ownership) With the launch of the Austrian Initiative for Digital Cultural Heritage in November 2003, the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Culture over the last year systematically built the necessary operational infrastructure to drive and co-ordinate the major Austrian digitisation activities. The strategic objectives of the Austrian Digital Heritage Initiative are:
    • to raise awareness for the European coordination effort and the Lund Principles within the Austrian cultural heritage community to stimulate and foster information transfer on digitisation activities from the European level, down to the national and regional level - and vice versa;

K. Cultural Policy and Scientific Cooperation Some 4,000 Austrian cultural events and projects were planned and carried out in more than 80 countries during the year 2000, the overwhelming majority with participation of private and public partners at home and abroad. There was a concentration on the reform countries of East-Central Europe, the European Union and the United States, but longer-term goals include an expansion of cultural activities in the Russian Federation and Israel. This regional concentration was supplemented by increased activity in South-Eastern Europe, where Austrian cultural policy is in a position to contribute to the stabilisation of this crisis region. The events of 2000 demonstrated clearly that the dissemination of information on Austrian history and identity is one of the most fundamental functions of cultural policy abroad. In addition to the geographical concentration, cultural planning over the next few years will also concentrate on a number of themes: Europe and the "European values"; working with the positive images of Austria (e.g. as a land of music); 20th-century Austrian history; Austria as partner of Central European neighbours; and the contribution of cultural policy to the stabilisation of the Balkans. The presentation of Austrian cultural creativeness in 2000 concentrated on 20th-century literature and music and on the liberal arts. Austria's chairmanship of the OSCE provided an opportunity to use concrete projects (e.g. renewal of history teaching in the Balkans, multicultural events, etc.) to promote security and cooperation.

FAX 479.575.4745 urelinfo@cavern.uark.edu FOR RELEASE: Thursday, February 28, 2002 AUSTRIAN CULTURAL PRIZE AWARDED TO UA HISTORIAN'S BOOK FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - More than two years after its initial publication, a University of Arkansas historian's book on Nazism in Austria continues to gain international acclaim. The Austrian Cultural Institute in New York and the Center for Austrian Studies at the University of Minnesota recently awarded Evan Burr Bukey the Austrian Cultural Forum Prize for his book, Hitler's Austria: Popular Sentiment in the Nazi Era, 1938-1945 "Bukey impressed the selection committee with the range and depth of sources he used to create his portrait of Austria during the Nazi period," said Gary Cohen, director of the Center for Austrian Studies. "They praised his research and his ability to take issues that have long been discussed by historians and cultural critics - namely how Austrians welcomed the Nazi regime into their country - and offer greater texture and depth of understanding to the subject." Funded by the Austrian Cultural Institute and administered through the Center for Austrian Studies, the prize is intended to encourage North American scholars to publish research on contemporary Austria or on the history of that nation. The prize includes a travel grant, which recipients can use to continue their research in Austria.

    Feature Mostly Not Mozart His English may be slightly fuzzy, but Christoph Thun-Hohenstein's mission is crystal clear: to make the Austrian Cultural Forum as provocative on the inside as its startling new East 52nd Street home is from the outside.
    By Jennifer Senior C hristoph Thun-Hohenstein moved to the United States just two and a half years ago, but he already speaks a fluent, firecracker English. True, certain prepositions still elude him ("I am the fastest walker of Manhattan!"), and true, he still makes the occasional chopped salad of American film titles ("Have you seen Three Angels for Charlie ?"). But periodic lapses in the American idiom hardly sabotage his credibility as director of the new Austrian Cultural Forum, which opens with a bang this Thursday. Particularly when he's trying to convince me, over lunch, that there's more to Austria than Klimt, lederhosen, and yodeling. "I've seen the movie Sound of Music ," he says, gamely waving his fork. "I'm a great admirer of the Vienna Philharmonic. And I noticed in the movie
