Otto Ditz
Ambassador Dear Fellow Countrymen and Dear Friends of Austria: It is a pleasure for me to welcome you to the web site of the Austrian Embassy. Here you will find information about politics, culture, economics and consular events; for news about foreign policy, cultural events abroad, joint international projects and current events, you may consult the web site of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In a country that is more than a hundred times as big as Austria, it is a formidable task indeed to promote the interests of our homeland and at the same time to see to the needs of Austrians now living in Canada. We like to see ourselves as a kind of central service centre receiving support from the branch offices in charge of foreign trade in Montreal and Toronto, and from the honorary consulates also. We are constantly seeking ways to strengthen the Austrian presence in Canada, in order to be a an even better partner for Canada in various joint ventures, and to extend a helping hand to our fellow Austrians who are now living in this beautiful country.

AUSTRIA INTRODUCTION The Republic of Austria (Österreich) is made up of 9 Bundesländer (federal provinces). The total land area of 83,335 square km is inhabited by 8.13 million people (1998). 64 per cent of the population live in towns, while the Province of Vienna is 100 per cent urbanized. Lower levels of administration include Bezirks (districts) and local communities. Austria's central geographical position in Europe has been responsible for many changes over the centuries, as well as for various political, cultural and economic influences coming from the rest of Europe. For more than six centuries (1273-1918) Austria was ruled by archdukes, emperors (including an empress) and kings. The basis for the Second Republic is laid out in the federal constitution of 1920, the State Treaty of Vienna and the Constitutional Law on Permanent Neutrality. The Constitution provides for a parliamentary democracy. On 1 January, subsequent to a referendum, Austria acceded to the European Union and became part of a supranational organisation. Community law has autonomous legal force and is directly applicable. It takes priority over national law and even over national constitutional law with the sole exception of constitutional principles. The Austrian economy reflects two principal factors: the country's attractive landscape and culture and abundant raw materials on the one hand and its highly trained and skilled labour force on the other. The latter is of particular significance and is reflected also in some of the basic cultural policy issues.

Austrian Cultural Forum Considered by Michael J. Crosbie To much fanfare and critical acclaim, the Austrian Cultural Forum tower in midtown Manhattan opened in April 2002 with a crush of visitors and curious onlookers. Even a small gathering at New York City's newest building would have been a crowded experience. At only 25 feet (7.6 meters) wide, the Austrian Cultural Forum recalls the "sliver building" craze of the 1980s and 90s, when developers in New York raced to raise emaciated towers on sites formerly occupied by lower structures not much wider than a townhouse. Designed by architecture professor, architect, and theorist Raimund Abraham, who has taught at Cooper Union for the past 30 years, the ACF exhibits both the "thrills and spills" of buildings on such narrow sites. Outside, the Thrills The thrills are evident the minute you turn the corner at Fifth Avenue and start heading east on 52nd Street. Before you a totem rises, calling into question everything around it. Because of its modest footprint, and because it is surrounded by buildings at least as tall if not taller, the ACF tower is all the more powerful, as it breaks ranks with its humdrum neighbors. Discuss this article in the Architecture Forum...

Sacked publisher Jochen Jung speaks in Berlin
By Stefan Steinberg
10 March 2000 Back to screen version At a meeting at the Literature Haus in Berlin this week publisher Jochen Jung related the details of his dismissal from his post as long-time business manager for the Residenz Publishing House in Salzburg. Residenz Publishers is the most respected publishing house in that country, specialising in contemporary Austrian and foreign literature. On February 1 the Residenz board of directors sacked Jung on the basis of a six-page plan which he had presented to the board for the further development of the publishing company. Residenz Publishing House was founded in 1956 and in 1983 was taken over by the Austrian State Publishing House. Jung had worked for the publishers for 25 years and was responsible for choosing new authors and pieces of literature. Jung personally promoted the works of Peter Handke and Thomas Bernhard, two of Austria's most well-known literary figures. In Berlin he outlined the role he played in changing the original philosophy of the publishers, which was to publish exclusively modern Austrian authors. Jung sought ways of introducing a broader spectrum of authors, including a number of non-Austrian authors who have in the meantime acquired international fame. Jung is not the only victim of a surge of nationalism in boardrooms which has accompanied the formation of the new regime in Vienna. At the beginning of February a local newspaper in Austria, the

The Constitution provides for a parliamentary democracy.
    General Directions of Cultural Policy
Austria belongs among nations whose identity is significantly determined by culture. Furthermore, it stands at the edge of a dominant economic and linguistic area, which necessarily makes its cultural policy the policy of identity and its culture the central factor in identifying positive national awareness.

of Austria Background:
Once the center of power for the large Austro-Hungarian Empire, Austria was reduced to a small republic after its defeat in World War I. Following annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938 and subsequent occupation by the victorious Allies, Austria's 1955 State Treaty declared the country "permanently neutral" as a condition of Soviet military withdrawal.
Neutrality, once ingrained as part of the Austrian cultural identity, has been called into question since the Soviet collapse of 1991 and Austria's increasingly prominent role in European affairs.

G¼nther Domenig, on the architect's imagination.
I love visiting the Austrian Cultural Forum building . Once you've greeted the very-New York concierge guy behind the desk inside the door of the narrow 24-story tower on 52nd Street, you could actually be in Wien. The two-year-old building designed by Raimund Abraham is that modern. And, yes, I really mean that about the city. The former capital of the Austro-Hungarian empire is no longer just old. Go see for yourself. Anyway, back in New York, yesterday I stopped by the Forum's current exhibition, “G¼nther Domenig: Structures that Fit My Nature,” which unfortunately offers only a tantalizing and impressionistic glimpse of the work of the interesting Styrian architect G¼nther Domenig . The modest spaces which occupy four levels of the building are mostly devoted to just two projects, the Steinhaus in Steindorf, K¤rnten (Carinthia) and the Dokumentationszentrum (Documentation Center) in Nuremberg, and there is precious little guidance to those (the supply of the show's brochure had been exhausted long before I arrived).
