CALL FOR PAPERS Baupläne für Zwischenräume / Blueprints for No-Man's Land Connections in Contemporary Austrian Culture University of Aberdeen, 14-17 September 2000 Künstlerische Forschung und Experiment sind ... ebenso wichtig wie die Produktion von Kunst (Peter Weibl) This interdisciplinary conference will investigate the connections between different forms of cultural production and representation in present-day Austria. It has two interrelated aims: first, to facilitate interaction between theorists and practitioners with an interest in contemporary Austrian culture and second, to explore areas of overlap between various forms of cultural representation in contemporary Austrian culture. The conference will be accompanied by literary readings, an art exhibition, and a theatre performance. These 'accompanying events' will form an integral part of the conference, while also presenting aspects of Austrian culture to a wider non-academic audience. Among those who have expressed an interest in contributing are Manfred Erjautz, Veronika Dreier, Theater im Bahnhof (Graz). Utilising as a central motif a model of the cultural sphere as city, divided into distinct, but overlapping areas through which theorists and practitioners circulate, we are seeking papers which explore the nature of the 'Zwischenräume' between different forms of representation. Papers should address the connections (historical, existing, potential and missed) between various cultural spheres such as: * literature * art * architecture * music * film * theatre and cabaret In each case, we are interested in both 'high' and 'low' culture, as well as in works which subvert this distinction.

In 1905 he founded the celebrated Workers Symphony Concerts and in 1919 he was appointed Director of the 'Sozialdemokratische Kunststelle', which enabled him to develop a dynamic programme of artistic events. In a situation of increasing polarization between Right and Left, he promoted inclusive forms of a cultural activity. The esteem in which he was held by contemporaries is reflected in the collection of eighty-eight literary, artistic and musical dedications which was presented to him in 1924 on the occasion of his fiftieth birthday. This collection, which Bach brought with him to Britain, forms a unique time capsule of Viennese cultural life." e-mail

    Subject: Foreign Language
Purpose: Using German, students study Austria in general and two Austrian states-Carinthia (Karnten) and Burgenland-in particular. Students use technology to develop an understanding of why Austrians and those who visit Austria value the natural beauty of both Carinthia and Burgenland. Students gather information on the Internet to develop an understanding of the roles of these two states within Austria.
Description: In this learning activity, the described Internet resources allow students to do exercises before and after reading; these exercises have been designed to support the mastery of vocabulary and the structures needed to understand and communicate effectively in German on the topic of Austria. Students learn about the practices and products of the Austrian culture, communicate about differences between their own and Austrian culture, and draw comparisons between their own lives and the lives of typical Austrians.
Note: The following set of activities is designed around a single Web site that incorporates existing Web sites in Austria to help students learn about that country. The Web site has been enhanced through Java scripting to ask various levels of questions about what is available on the targeted site. This format is not unique to Austria or the German language. With some instruction in Java scripting, teachers can create comprehensive Web sites such as this one to meet their own objectives in the instruction of any foreign language. Additionally, language development focused Web sites are continuing to emerge on the Internet.
