A Brief Look at the History of Austrian Culture
Although Austrian literature and drama date back to the 12 th century it is best known since the classical period and the golden age of the Viennese popular comedy in the 19 th century. Around 1890 major changes took place in Austrian literature and since then Austria became a leading center of literature in German language and the world of Austrian literature since 1945 has been extremely varied. User's Guide Entries : Austrians Entries A Austrians Next Austrians With nearly 40,000 residents of Austrian ancestry at the end of the twentieth century, Chicago is, at least symbolically, the most Austrian city outside of Austria itself. Austrian ethnicity and national affiliation, however, must be interpreted from four distinct historical paths, both European and American. First, Austrian identity in Chicago historically derives from the multicultural mosaic of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, whose populations spoke various Slavic, Hungarian, Romanian, Italian, and Yiddish languages, as well as German Serbia . Fourth, Austrian identity in Chicago may result from postethnic decision-making, in which immigrants from one region or dialect region may participate in the activities of another or join organizations that espouse a unified Austrian national culture, which in turn welcomes non-Austrians as different as Hungarians or Slovaks from the former empire or war brides returning after World War II.

From The Editors
Modern Austrian Literature, Vol. 33 # 1
-Robert Musil, Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften Most of us associate Modern Austrian Literature with Donald Daviau and Jorun Johns and for good reason. Donald Daviau (University of California-Riverside) served as editor of the journal from 1971 to 1999 and Jorun Johns (California State San Bernadino) served as Secretary-Treasurer from 1974 to 1998. And as Don pointed out in his retrospective on the twenty-fifth anniver-sary of the organization in 1987, he had been with the journal since its inception in 1961, when it appeared under its first name Journal of the International Arthur Schnitzler Research Association. The journal began as a modest mimeographed newsletter for the newly formed International Arthur Schnitzler Research Association. Robert O. Weiss, the organization's first president, declared that the professional group saw the need for an organized effort "to lift the treasure of Schnitzler's work to obtain for it its rightful place among the great cultural accomplishments of modern times" (4). A dedicated group of 61 "active" and 32 "associate" members from the United States, Italy, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Canada, Sweden, Israel, France, Australia, and Brazil set out to reexamine the works of Arthur Schnitzler, making his literature and papers more accessible through a microfilm archive housed at the University of Kentucky. Among the first members were the luminaries Ernst Lothar, Friedrich Torberg, and Hans Weigel.

Austrian Culture
Austria is recognized throughout the world because of its central function as a link between East and West, and its rich cultural past and present. The vast cultural opportunities include magnificent historic architectural monuments, the current graphic arts exhibitions, theatre programmes, concerts, festivals large and small, and traditions. World-renowned choirs (such as the Vienna Boys' Choir, the Arnold-Schoenberg-Choir) and orchestras (such as the Vienna Philharmonic, the Wiener Symphoniker, the Camerata Academica Salzburg, the Concertus Musicus, and the Vienna Art Orchestra) spread Austria's fame far and wide throughout the world.
Literature
Austrian literature celebrates the Nibelungenlied (dating from around 1200) as its first great masterpiece. Various nineteenth century dramatists, among them Franz Grillparzer, Ferdinand Raimund, Johann, and Nestroy Adalbert Stifter are still read and performed today. 20th century writers of international renown are, among others, Franz Kafka, Arthur Schnitzler, Stefan Zweig, Joseph Roth, Robert Musil, Ingeborg Bachmann, Thomas Bernhard, and Peter Handke.

AUSTRIAN CULTURE: FILM
It all started so well in the era of silent film with Carl Mayer thinking up the script for expressionist nightmare 'Cabinet of Dr. Caligari' realized by German director Fritz Murnau. Viennese born MGM star Hedy Lamarr took a giant step to fame by posing as the first nude women of film history. After several box office hits (among them color film 'Samson and Delilah') she retreated from public live only to surprise the world by inventing a device to remote controll tropedoes by frequence hopping during World War II.

EASTON, Pa.( www.lafayette.edu ), September 27, 2001 — Margarete Lamb-Faffelberger, associate professor of foreign languages and literatures, has been named general editor of the Austria Culture Series produced by Peter Lang Publishing, New York.
"I am very honored to engage in this important work of editorship," says Lamb-Faffelberger, president of the Central Pennsylvania chapter of the American Association of Teachers of German. "The Austrian Culture Series exhibits interdisciplinary, intercultural, and international dimensions of great importance."
Peter Lang Publishing is headquartered in Bern, Switzerland and New York, N.Y., with offices in London, Frankfurt, and other cities worldwide.
Lamb-Faffelberger also will host 35 scholars from 11 countries at Lafayette for the sixth Annual Conference of Austrian Literature and Culture, "Visions and Visionaries in Literature and Film of Modern Austria," Oct. 18-20. She is serving as one of two co-organizers of the conference.
"The scope of the conference underscores the strong interest in modern Austrian literature and culture studies, a field that has been an integral part of American Germanistics for several decades," says Lamb-Faffelberger. "We owe its high standing to the extensive personal and professional engagement of our predecessors, of those scholars and teachers who worked tirelessly to give voice to Austrian literature in the United States. Their 'labor of love' built bridges between the two countries and secured a dynamic intellectual and intercultural exchange. "

Austriaca
The main priority of any national library is to collect literature in and about the country it represents. Austriaca therefore clearly rate as the focal collecting policy for the Austrian National Library and can be defined as follows:
  • Depository Copies in accordance with Austrian media law
    Austriaca abroad

The independent further existence of Austrian culture outside the country is also a consideration in the collecting policy followed (e.g. the Prague circle, psychoanalysis etc.). Areas which only belonged to Austria in the form of a Habsburg regent are rated as Austriaca only in so far as the publication establishes an Austrian connection or reciprocal influence.
The same applies to works by Austrians published abroad irrespective of the author's actual citizenship.
Persons who have served Austria, or who were born in what was once Austria and who are carriers of Austrian culture and intellect abroad are included in the definition of Austriaca. (e.g. Ludwig van Beethoven, Johannes Brahms, Friedrich Hebbel, Heinrich Laube, Claus Peymann and others). For reasons of financing and space, translations are merely selected and generally not collected, although they are registered in the Austrian Bibliography, section C, which includes Austriaca available from abroad (plus call number) and titles of works not acquired. Belletristic works are an exception. The acquisitions department is eager to acquire all available translations by Austrian authors. Historical State Territory

Research activity
In its first years, the Centre will focus on the nature, influence and reception of 20th-century Austrian culture in its widest sense, seeking to address a series of interrelated research questions:
  • What kinds of connections can be established between different modes of contemporary cultural production in Austria? How has cultural expression in all its manifestations developed over the course of the 20th-century in Austria? What has been the nature of cross-cultural interaction between Britain and Austria during the 20th century? What has been the relationship between cultural policy and cultural production in 20th-century Austria?
The notion of interdisciplinarity which stands at the core of the Centre's aims will not only operate at the level of academic discourse, but also entails a commitment to productive interaction between theorists and practitioners.

April 20, 2001
Serbian Culture Minister Branislav Lecic
Belgrade, April 19 (Tanjug) - Serbian Culture Minister Branislav Lecic opened Thursday evening " Days of Viennese culture in Belgrade", which started by the opening of the Austrian Library in one of the several buildings belonging to the Medical School of the University of Belgrade in Deligradska Street. During the festivity, Vienna and Austrian culture will be presented in a series of cultural events by May 5. " After great efforts of Serbian people to enter the field of peace and democracy we now have an opportunity to participate in a new age when Serbia builds brick by brick its democratic edifice", Lecic said. " Culture is nothing else but exchange and contact with other peoples and nations. We have been imprisoned for too long and therefore I, as Culture Minister, don' t want that claustrophobia time to happen to my people ever again ," he said. Secretary General of the Austrian Foreign Ministry Albert Rohan said that October 5 of the last year was good day for Serbia and Europe, because on that day Serbian people put an end to Milosevic's rule peacefully.

XIDS 2100 Turn of the Century German and austrian culture students will gainan understanding of the German and Austrian Cultural contexts of the time
http://www.westga.edu/~mcormica/xidss2005.html
XIDS 2100: Turn of the Century German and Austrian Culture Instructor: Dr. Muriel Cormican Office: 106 Cobb Hall Tel: E-mail: mcormica@westga.edu Webpage: www.westga.edu/~mcormica Web syllabus: www.westga.edu/~mcormica/xidss2005.html Office Hours: MTWR 12:10-1:50, R 3:20-4:00 and by appointment. Description: The turn of the twentieth century in Germany and Austria was a highly troubled time and a highly creative one. People faced upheaval, change, confusion, and ambiguity in almost all areas of their lives – geography, politics, economics, technology, medicine, identity, and sexuality. Anti-Semitism and misogyny, for example, were a part of life and coexisted with Zionism and an active Women's Movement. Everyday concerns with such issues, as well as with the worker’s movement, increasing industrialization, and nationalism, are reflected in the artistic products of the time in ambivalent and complicated ways that we will describe and discuss. Art, literature, philosophy, music, architecture, and film not only reflected the thrills and trials of social, political, and cultural change but they themselves were also undergoing radical changes from within in genre and form. By studying, discussing, interpreting, exchanging and recording ideas on essays (Weininger, Freud), plays (Hauptmann, Schnitzler), short stories (Mann), novellas (Andreas-Salomé), films (Murnau, Lang, Rusowitsky), paintings (Klimt, Feininger, Dix) produced in, or portraying the time period of, 1880-1930, not only from a thematic but also from an aesthetic point of view, students will gain an understanding of the German and Austrian Cultural contexts of the time and of the people who lived, worked, and died in them.
