The Royal Australian Navy in the Vietnam War
Reproduced with kind permission of the author, Joe Straczek, Senior Naval Historical and Archives Officer The Royal Australian Navy's role in the Vietnam War is sometimes overlooked by comparison with the Army's larger numerical involvement. As well as serving in ships deployed to Vietnam naval personnel served in clearance diving teams, the Navy helicopter flight, in logistic support roles and in medical teams. Australian destroyers sailed nearly 400,000 miles in the course of the war and fired more than 100,000 rounds of ammunition. The converted aircraft carrier HMAS SYDNEY carried about 16,000 Australian troops as the famed `Vung Tau Ferry'. Australian Clearance Divers carried out several thousand ship searches looking for bombs and other explosive devices. A total of eight officers and sailors of the RAN were killed and nearly 50 injured in the 10 years of our Navy's involvement in hostilities.
Early Goodwill Visits
Though the RAN did not become operationally involved in the Vietnam conflict until 1965, HMA Ships VAMPIRE and QUICKMATCH were the first ships in the area when they made a goodwill visit to Saigon in 1962.

Australian Military in Iraq Renders First Aid to Russian Diplomats Caught in Crossfire
The Australian military in Iraq have rendered first aid to the Russian journalists and diplomats who got caught in the crossfire while travelling from Baghdad to Syria, Australian Premier John Howard announced on Tuesday.
According to him, an Australian task force met the Russian motorcade 200 kilometres away from Baghdad, lent first aid to the wounded, and even offered to evacuate them to a hospital.
"We were very polite and diplomatic to the Russian ambassador and his colleagues from the Embassy," said Howard. "They were allowed to move on as soon as all necessary checks were over and the wounded tended to." The premier refused to say who he thought had attacked the Russian motorcade, saying only Australians had nothing to do with the attack.

Friday, August 12, 2005, Page A10 Sydney A stray bomb dropped by a U.S. warplane has damaged facilities on a remote Australian military training range, officials said this morning. Former head of Australian military sees withdrawal from Iraq by 2006
SYDNEY: Foreign troops in Iraq are motivating "terrorists" there and should be pulled out as soon as possible, preferably by the end of 2006, the recently retired head of Australia's military said. US-led coalition troops should be removed as quickly as local forces can be trained to take their place, said Peter Cosgrove, who stepped down as head of the Australian Defence Force in June, in a television programme to be aired late Monday. "I think we've got to train the Iraqis as quickly as we can and to a point where we take one of the focal points of terrorist motivation away, and that is foreign troops," the retired general said in the ABC programme.
