INDIGENOUS AUSTRALIANS AT WAR This site is dedicated to all Indigenous Australians who have served Australia in war and peacetime. . . "THE COLOURED DIGGER" He came and joined the colours, when the War God's anvil rang, He took up modern weapons to replace his boomerang, He waited for no call-up, he didn't need a push, He came in from the stations, and the townships of the bush. He helped when help was wanting, just because he wasn't deaf; He is right amongst the columns of the fighting A.I.F. He is always there when wanted, with his Owen gun or Bren, He is in the forward area, the place where men are men. He proved he's still a warrior, in action not afraid, He faced the blasting red hot fire from mortar and grenade; He didn't mind when food was low, or we were getting thin, He didn't growl or worry then, he'd cheer us with his grin. He'd heard us talk democracy, They preach it to his face Yet knows that in our Federal House there's no one of his race. He feels we push his kinsmen out, where cities do not reach, And Parliament has yet to hear the Abo's maiden speech.

Aussies kept gung-ho US in check
John Kerin
August 09, 2005 AUSTRALIAN and British military legal advisers frequently had to "red card" more trigger-happy US forces to limit civilian casualties during the invasion of Iraq in 2003, according to one of the Australian advisers.
Colonel Mike Kelly, writing in the Australian Army Journal, says the junior partners in the coalition forces succeeded in reducing civilian casualties and reinforcing the legitimacy of the invasion to topple Saddam Hussein. In the most detailed insight yet into the secret rules Australian forces operated under during the conflict in 2003, Colonel Kelly, who went on to become a senior adviser to the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq, said for Australian forces to open fire the enemy was "required to visibly carry weapons while deploying for an attack". Defence sources said that under more relaxed US rules there only had to be a "reasonable suspicion" that the person was an enemy combatant and a threat.

The Australian Military and Iraq
Given Australian PM John Howard's appearance with Bush
in Washington on Tuesday, the question of the role of Australian troops in Iraq remains a live one especially in view of British plans to draw down their contingent to only 3,000 in the next year.
Brian writes from Australia:
' You write "I remain unconvinced that the new Iraqi army will actually be able to take up the slack, even if the Australians help out."
I am an Australian. A former Australian army officer, indeed. And I say that Australia could not send more than two battalions (it has only six, most understrength) to Iraq or anywhere else for more than a year without suffering terminal damage to its structure. And two battalions would not make the slightest contribution to the internal security of the country.
Further, I was a trainer of soldiers at one time. (For two years after I returned from Vietnam, in fact.) And I state without fear of contradiction by any professional that the Iraqi army will not be in any shape to operate effectively for many, many years, given the present training program, such as it is.

IN AUSTRALIA DURING WW2 visits since 30 March 2002 In early 1942, the possible threat of a Japanese invasion was considered a distinct possibility. At the time our lines of communication depended on lines or wireless. After a review of our communications capability, a number of weaknesses were revealed. Lines were vulnerable to interference by the enemy, wireless communications could be monitored, and messengers may be intercepted by the enemy. A conference was held between some prominent homing pigeon owners and some Senior Australian Army Signals officers. It was decided to initiate a series of trials using specially selected pigeons. After the satisfactory completion of the trials it was decided to establish the Pigeon Service as part of the Australian Corps of Signals. The role of the Pigeon Service was to provide an alternative means of communications between coastal defence areas following an invasion or damage to existing communications infrastructure by the enemy. A number of serving members of the Australian Corps of Signals who had been pigeon fanciers before the war were selected to establish the Pigeon Service. They were joined by a number of civilian pigeon fanciers who were enlisted into the Army. Some of the Officers selected for the Pigeon Service were:-
