Life in a New Land: Evolving Australian Literature
"The basic Australian literary tradition is a compound of sound learning, rebelliousness, ardent faith in the common man, and an even more ardent faith in the Australian future. What better tradition could any nation want?"
~ C. Hartley Grattan, in Introducing Australia (New York, 1942)
The first decades after European settlement in Australia in 1788 were primarily devoted to procuring the necessities of life. The first literature described life in this extraordinary and harsh new land-memoirs, fictionalized autobiographies, and descriptive accounts of all aspects of pioneer life. Marcus Clarke's For the Term of his Natural Life (1874) told of life in the convict colonies, while Rolf Boldrewood painted a more romanticized view of bushranger life in his Robbery Under Arms (1888). Colonial poets Charles Harpur and Henry Kendall imitated the English romantic poetic style in their work as they attempted to come to terms with their new environment. As Australian writers became more comfortable in their strange new land, their writing matured and developed a distinctive Australian style and flavour.

You might find the Australian Literature Gateway of interest. AusLit was
produced (and is maintained) by the Australian Defence Force Academy at the
University of New South Wales with funding from the Australian Research
Council. It is notable because it is the first implementation of the IFLA
Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (1998), which implements
    the work-expression-manifestation-item model.
While it will eventually only be available by subscription, it is free for
    a trial period at http://www.austlit.edu.au
The manual for creating records can be found here: http://www.austlit.edu.au/common/manual/WorksContents.html In addition to the implementation of the IFLA model, it is also noteworthy for its use of standards and innovative technology. · Java 1.3 programming language and runtime

    http://www.une.edu.au/calls/
About CALLS The Centre for Australian Language and Literature Studies (CALLS) was established in 1989 to promote the research and teaching of Australian Language and Literature, and to encourage Australian writing. In 1998, it was expanded to encompass all the disciplines that come under the heading of Australian Studies, and its name changed to CALLS: The Centre for Australian Studies, UNE. The Centre is located in the Faculty of Arts at the University of New England. The focus of the Centre's activities is regional, national and international. Two regional conferences and a symposium have been held so far - at Kendall High School (1989) to celebrate the work of Henry Kendall, and at Gulgong (1991) to concentrate attention on the writings of Louisa and Henry Lawson. Important publications have resulted from these two conferences. A symposium, The Heritage Maze, was held in 1999, and another is planned for later this year. These symposia reflect the expanded CALLS, and the range of disciplines involved in Australian Studies.
