The Edinburgh Castle Hotel is the latest ALH venue to adopt the Brewbar format. The concept is turning outdated sports bars into a brand new type of public bar. Whilst these bars still have traditional sporting and betting facilities, they are also geared to cater for the younger crowds, especially at night. All this combines to give the Brewbars a flexibility that the old sports bars never seemed to manage. Brewbars mark a real shift in direction for ALH, a company that has been a major force in the hotel industry for years, and Nightlife Music Video is proud to be playing a part in that change. • The gay leisure travel market, an estimated 209,000 Australians, represents approximately $656 million a year. The proportion of gay people (71%) who have taken a leisure travel trip in the last 12 months is similar to the total general population (70%). The average length of stay for gay travellers (7.2 nights) is less than the total travelling population (7.8 nights). While gay travellers are less likely than the total travelling population to have a long trip of three or more nights planned (77% cf 80%), they are more likely to have a short trip of one to two nights planned (83% cf 77%) and their average per night spend is relatively high at $121 (compared with $116 for the average Australian leisure traveller).

Michael Pascoe asks the Australian Leisure and Hospitality Group Chief Executive Officer Geoff Rankin about the Woolworth's takeover of ALH. Michael Pascoe (Finance Editor):  As usual, it has been quite a week, what with National Australia Bank CEO John Stewart destroying whatever honeymoon goodwill he had left with the market and James Hardie Industries effectively admitting to serious shortcomings in its corporate morality, while officially admitting nothing.
But the week started with the Australian Leisure and Hospitality board meeting to consider the Woolworths takeover offer of $2.75 a share for Australia's biggest pub chain and poker machine operator and our third biggest bottle shop. The board's immediate response was that the offer was grossly inadequate. On Friday, ALH gave us their first interview. In his St Kilda Road headquarters, I started by putting to CEO Geoff Rankin that if $2.75 was grossly inadequate, had Fosters been grossly incompetent in selling off ALH for $2.33 a share nine months ago?
Geoff Rankin (ALH CEO):  Well, ALH is a great business and, you know, got great assets around the country. The work that we've done on building the business up since we floated away from Foster's, I think, just adds further value to the ALH business.
