Chapter 1: Leisure and Life Satisfaction On-Line Lesson Topics: Life Satisfaction: Elements of Flow Life Satisfaction Related to: Age; Work; Community and Lifestyle Lifestyle Management: Roles of leisure service organizations (12) Leisure Constraints Leisure Motivation Questionnaire (LMQ) Terms: Life Satisfaction Flow Variables: subject; demographic and psychological dimensions Optimal Lifestyle Constraint Flow Theory was developed by Csikszentmihalyi (1990) to describe what can only be a pure state of leisure. Flow : "The state in which people are so involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter; the experience itself is so enjoyable that people will do it even at great cost, for the sheer sake of doing it" (p.4). OR "Is that experience that lifts the course of life to a different level. Alienation gives way to involvement, enjoyment replaces boredom, helpless ness turns into a feeling of control, and psychic energy works to reinforce the sense of self instead of being lost in the service of external goals" (p.69). Elements Necessary for Flow A challenging activity that requires skill.
