Changing Consumption and Production Patterns: Working in Partnership with Australian Industry
Environment Australia, August 2002
Contents
Improving the sustainability of consumption and production patterns is an ongoing priority for Australian governments. It is increasingly being found that voluntary partnerships encourage business and industry to move beyond compliance towards sustainability. While regulations are necessary to ensure minimum environmental standards are met by industry, they offer industry few incentives to make further improvements. Partnerships can create an atmosphere of trust, cooperation and shared responsibility. They can also create a culture that rewards innovation and empowers consumers by harnessing market forces to help them choose more sustainable products. Australian governments have entered into a range of partnerships to improve the eco-efficiency and environmental performance of Australian industry. In so doing, the competitiveness and economic efficiency of the industries should also improve. Here are examples of the cooperative initiatives underway in Australia, aimed at improving the sustainability of Australia's business and industry.
