CONSULTATION WITH INDUSTRY
In implementing the revised FATF Forty Recommendations the Government is committed to a full and comprehensive consultation process with all those who might be impacted upon through changes to Australia's anti-money laundering system. The Government will work in partnership with industry to ensure that Australia's system continues to reflect international best practice while minimising the costs of compliance. While the Forty Recommendations provide the template, the Government will decide in consultation with Australian industry the best means of implementing the Recommendations to suit Australian conditions. The extensive consultation process continues to occur on a number of levels. Minister for Justice and Customs, Senator Chris Ellison has invited representatives of selected industry associations to participate in a Ministerial Advisory Group. The Ministerial Advisory Group provides a forum for high level discussion of implementation options for Australian industry as a whole and for each of the affected industry sectors. The Group, which also includes representatives from Treasury, AUSTRAC and the Office of Small Business, has met on 11 March and 24 June 2004. Where other Government forums exist for which discussion of the revised FATF Forty Recommendations would positively contribute to the agenda, senior officials from the implementation team will be available to participate in those meetings. The implementation team is located in the Commonwealth Attorney General's Department and includes representatives from the Department of the Treasury and the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC), the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and the Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC). AUSTRAC is Australia's anti-money laundering regulator and specialist financial intelligence unit.

Industry applauds uranium decision
August 05, 2005 THERE is significant interest in uranium mining in the Northern Territory but the starting date of any new operation is still a few years away, according to a peak industry body.
The Federal Government yesterday declared the Northern Territory open to uranium mining, provided indigenous landowners approve and environmental standards are met. Minerals Council of Australia chief executive Mitch Hooke said today companies could now begin to position themselves to take advantage of record prices in the global uranium market, of which Australia has about 20 per cent market share. The NT Labor Government is vehemently opposed to uranium mining but conceded the Federal Government has the power to allow new mines . Federal Resources Minister Ian Macfarlane said there was worldwide demand for uranium and it was not feasible to refuse the opportunity to develop a resource based on a political whim.

Industry enjoys its Morris dance
Paddy Manning
August 04, 2005 FROM mock funerals to costly economists' reports, it was the mother of all lobbying campaigns.
This week the property industry succeeded in its campaign to have what it called the "world's dumbest tax" abolished. From the day it was introduced in May 2004, the NSW vendor tax sparked industry vitriol and, far from letting up, the ill-feeling intensified. By the end the hated tax was being blamed for just about everything wrong with the NSW economy. The core industry argument was presented in a report commissioned from Access Economics that showed the tax could cost the Government more money in lost revenue from purchaser stamp duty on the reduced number of property transactions than it raised.
The Property Council of Australia pushed the message relentlessly in a slow-burn campaign monitoring the shortfall in monthly projected revenue from the tax.

About Woolwise
About the Wool Education Trust Educational Resources Wool Talk ... Useful Links
Woolwise.com is a resource for educators, researchers, consultants, students and other stakeholders in the wool industry. It was established using funds provided by the Co-operative Research Centre (CRC) for Premium Quality Wool and the former AWTA Ltd Wool Education Trust The AWTA Ltd Wool Education Trust has now been renamed the Australian Wool Education Trust
The Co-operative Research Centre for Premium Quality Wool was established on the 1st July 1993, This web site was created as a service to the wool industry and as a distribution vehicle for the wool education resources developed by the CRC over a period of many years. The CRC has since been wound up, and with the agreement of the partners the ongoing management and ownership of the site was reassigned to the AWTA Ltd Wool Education Trust.
This transition has caused a temporary halt in the development and maintenance of the site. The AWTA Ltd Wool Education Trust did not itself have the resources available to do this. Instead the Trustees decided to work with the new Australian Sheep Industry CRC, which was was established on 1st July 2001. The Trust was a supporting partner of the CRC.
