$7,000 in innovation support The Office of Science and Innovation (OSI) introduced the Science and Innovation Studentship Award to promote innovation in industry by sponsoring tertiary students to undertake research projects of interest to companies. This year up to 20 Studentships will be awarded. Successful students work full-time with a Western Australian company of their choice in collaboration with a local University on a specific research project for a period of ten weeks over the University summer break. The Office of Science and Innovation will fund the student $7,000 to complete the project. In addition to gaining the benefit of the research, at no cost, host companies also have the opportunity to form or strengthen ties with research institutions. The Studentships often attract outstanding students, and will contribute to many successful outcomes for WA companies.

Australian industry wins fight against subsidised imports

The World Today - Thursday, 12 May , 2005 12:22:00
Reporter: Stephen Long
ELEANOR HALL: Australian industry has won a big victory in its fight against the "dumping" of subsidised imports from China and other countries. The Federal Government has changed Australia's anti-dumping rules to block goods that are sold here below their normal value due to Government control or influence.
It's done so after intense lobbying by local manufacturers, and despite claims by critics that the anti-dumping laws are a form of protectionism. The change takes effect tomorrow, and it's a trade-off for the Australian Government granting "market economy status" to China, in advance of the trade deal negotiations.

QUENTIN DEMPSTER: Leigh Purnell, President Bush says the US can impose this tariff and quota on steel imports under World Trade Organisation rules. Is this true?
Is the US decision justiciable?
Is there any free or fair trade referee Australia can go to? LEIGH PURNELL: Well, they also thought that they were OK on lamb, and they weren't. From our point of view, this is challengeable within the WTO, and it's certainly one of the options that Australian industry and the Australian Government will be looking at.

Australia's Wine Industry: International Opportunities and Challenges
Introduction Alister Purbrick, Industry leaders, Ladies and Gentlemen, Thank you for your kind introduction, Alister. It is my great pleasure to welcome you all to Adelaide, my home town – and heartland of the Australian wine industry - as host of the 2001 Wine Industry Outlook Conference. In 1838 wine cuttings were brought from the Cape of Good Hope and planted just few miles from here in the McLaren Vale district. Today South Australia accounts for just under half Australia’s total wine grape production, and encompasses famous production areas such as McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Coonawarra, Padthaway and Langhorne Creek.

SIA Submissions to Government DITR 5.0 Would the Australian industry's performance be enhanced through the Action Agenda process, including terms of growth in output, employment and exports? SIA Response. Yes Growth in the Scientific Industry drives growth in other industries, both up-stream and down-stream in the value chain. Driving growth in supplier industries Manufacturers in the Scientific Industry outsource a significant proportion of their value-adding to other Australian businesses, driving growth in industry sectors such as:
  • Market research Plastics and polymer production Product design, Graphic design, Printing Regulatory compliance testing Software and multi-media Electronics Marketing Precision engineering Transport and logistics
Driving growth in customer industries Advances in Australian scientific products and services enable other Australian manufacturers to improve their efficiency and the quality of their products, thereby driving competitive advantage and increased demand. Examples of growth industries driven by scientific and quality advantages include the wine industry, food processing, mineral exploration and processing, and agriculture. Driving growth in enabling industries
  • Many of the companies supplying design, engineering or contract manufacturing services to the Scientific Industry exist primarily to serve the Australian automotive industry. The continuing existence of a viable automotive industry in Australia is therefore critical to sustain the future growth of the Australian Scientific Industry.

Economic booms are not new to the Australian wine industry – they’ve had five in the past 150 years.
A feature of the most recent boom has been the Australian industry’s charge into exporting, carving out market share around the world, mostly at the expense of European producers. But like other farm export industries, the wine world is rapidly globalising and becoming more competitive, with exchange rate and other pressures adding to the uncertainty.
In October 2003, Agriculture Minister Warren Truss told the Wine Industry Outlook Conference the value of Australia’s wine exports was $2.4 billion a year. That’s 522 million litres – the equivalent of 158,000 cases of wine – leaving Australia every day of the year. In 10 years, the number of Australian wine businesses had more than doubled, from around 800 in 1994.
The 22 largest wine companies in Australia, Mr Truss said, accounted for 92 per cent of all wine sales, leaving more than 1,600 to compete for the remaining market.

Issue No.09 AUSTRALIAN PACKAGING - HOW COMPETITIVE? KEY POINTS:
  • In recent years the Australian packaging industry has been criticised for being high cost, thereby eroding the competitiveness of the users of packaging. Much of this criticism lacks substance. Nowadays, the Australian packaging industry is outward looking and export-oriented to an unprecedented degree. It is winning an increasing amount of the global packaging market. The increasing international focus - and success - of the Australian packaging industry suggests that its domestic operations are competitive and, at the very least, not all that far short of international best practice. Success overseas is dependent upon a company's Australian operations being up to the mark. There is, however, no room for complacency. The focus on winning international business will continue, requiring the Australian packaging industry to constantly monitor its performance against the standards of international best practice. The Australian industry will continue to be under pressure to provide its customers with cost competitive and innovative solutions while maintaining the highest levels of quality and service. Important issues remain to be addressed, many of which are being considered by the Agri-Food Council, of which Garry Ringwood, President of the Packaging Council, is a member.

Big opportunities for Australian industry in digital broadcasting 'Australia's transition to digital broadcasting offers significant manufacturing, software and content opportunities for Australian industry potentially worth billions of dollars,' the Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Senator Richard Alston, said today. 'The Government is particularly heartened by the high level of interest shown by Australian firms in these opportunities, with about 100 industry representatives attending a recent seminar.' Senator Alston said the seminar discussed the findings of a report by Digital Business Consulting which estimated that 25 per cent of Australia's 6.8 million homes will have digital television receivers by 2005. The report identified a range of opportunities for Australian industry including the design and manufacture of transmission systems, digital studio production equipment, and television receiver units such as set top boxes. 'The provision of digital software solutions for enhanced television applications, content development, datacasting and interactive services, is seen as another area in which Australian industry is internationally competitive,' Senator Alston said. 'Australian companies have the expertise and creativity needed to develop digital broadcasting products and services that can succeed in world markets, and generate significant export income for Australia.'

The Challenge For Australian Industry
06 August 2001
Australia needs a plan for the nation says ACTU President Sharan Burrow. At the heart of this, an industry plan must drive the generation of jobs, demand the skill base necessary for the 21st century, and create the productive wealth on which a cohesive, inclusive and just society can depend. Thank you for the invitation to speak here today. Renewing the nation's agenda is a critical discussion for Australia.
Australia needs a plan for the nation. At the heart of this, an industry plan must drive the generation of jobs, demand the skill base necessary for the 21st century, and create the productive wealth on which a cohesive, inclusive and just society can depend.
The Coalition Government has no such plan.
Our key competitors including the United States and Japan, and smart countries like Finland, are now investing more than three times as much as Australia, as a proportion of GDP, on future industry growth. Since the Howard Government came to office, Australia has spent between $40 billion and $60 billion less than the OECD average on education and innovation (Chifley Institute 2001). The human consequences are already being felt. In the eight months to May this year, 58,000 full-time jobs disappeared from our economy. The Government's own leading indicator of employment has shown five consecutive months of decline.
