    Briefly: Australian industry shows contraction
Bloomberg News TUESDAY, AUGUST 2, 2005 Australian industry shows contraction Australia's manufacturing industry contracted for the first time in four years in July as factories cut their output of construction materials and chemicals, a survey released Monday said. The index that measures Australian manufacturing output fell 6.5 points to 48.7 in July, the Australian Industry Group and Pricewater-houseCoopers said in the report. It is the first time since mid-2001 that the index has had a reading below 50, which indicates the industry is contracting. Inflation accelerates Inflation in Thailand sped up to a six-year high in July as higher fuel prices made transportation costlier. The consumer price index rose 5.3 percent from a year earlier after climbing 3.8 percent in June, the Commerce Ministry said. That was the biggest gain since October 1998.

A further deterioration in exports and weak growth in new orders left manufacturing stuck in low gear in March. Nevertheless, the Australian Industry Group - PricewaterhouseCoopers Australian PMI rose by 1.8 points to 52.6 - still well below the peak of late 2004 and down on the 55.4 recorded at the same time last year.
The Australian PMI points to annual manufacturing growth of around 2% and non-farm GDP growth of over 2.5%.

Australian Industry Group / PricewaterhouseCoopers Survey of Australian Manufacturing - March quarter 2005
The latest issue of the Australian Industry Group/PricewaterhouseCoopers Survey of Australian Manufacturing has shown that manufacturing production growth steadied in the March quarter 2005, following the slowdown over much of 2004. However, it was the weakest March quarter outcome in four years, and was underpinned primarily by the largest increase in inventories of finished goods in the history of the survey. Although strenthening moderately (driven largely by the food and beverage and textile sectors), growth in sales and new orders is anticipated to ease in the June quarter. Along with a resumption of inventory depletion, production growth in the June quarter is projected to be the weakest since the September quarter 2001.
While higher raw material costs were again the major constraint on production growth, the outcome was down from 29% in the previous quarter. The number of firms citing labour shortages also eased slightly. The effect of import penetration was unchanged, but the proportion citing an unfavourable exchange rate increased to the highest level since mid-2004.
Production expanded in nine sectors in the March quarter 2005 - confined, however, to New South Wales and Tasmania. Elsewhere, growth slowed sharply in Western Australia (although remaining relatively strong), and also in Queensland.

Free trade agreement timetable key dates Negotiators have been in regular contact since the last round of formal negotiations in Hawaii in July, with an intercessional meeting held in late September. The next round of negotiations will start on 27 October in Canberra, with the final round to commence in early December in Washington.
AFC delegation lobbies key US stakeholders in Washington and Los Angeles An AFC delegation recently travelled to Washington and Los Angeles to advocate the need for cultural reservations for the Australia-US Free Trade Agreement.
AFC Chair Maureen Barron, Chief Executive Kim Dalton and Policy Director Kim Ireland met with members of the Friends of Australia Congressional Caucus, advisors to members of the powerful Senate Ways and Means Committee, key United States Trade Representative officials, as well as executives of the Motion Picture Association, The Screen Director's Guild of America, The Writers' Guild of America West and The Screen Actors' Guild.
The discussions provided an opportunity to put forward Australia's case for cultural reservations, to highlight the significant differences between the US and Australian industries in terms of size and critical mass, and outline the limited scope and transparent nature of Australia's existing cultural support mechanisms. It also proved an excellent forum to argue that cultural policy objectives focused on securing minimum levels of Australian content, not protecting the Australian audiovisual market from competition. The AFC also welcomed the chance to better understand the issues and concerns facing the US industry.
