  • Articles from newspapers and the trade press. Industry and trade associations can be of use when researching an industry. Consult the Directory of Australian Associations go to Library Catalogue ) to find out if the industry you are researching has an association, or search the Internet . These associations usually publish information either in print or on their Web sites
Many trade journals are indexed in databases such as Factiva ProQuest databases, Business Source Premier etc. Government Information is an important component of industry research, and don't forget also to search for statistics, for example the ABS . Use ABS data to find out about your target markets in Australia; for example Census 2001 Industry overviews, are a ready made source of information. Good sources of these are

Howard Government Failing Australian Industry And Employees
      Stephen Smith
      Media Statement - 1st August 2005
Today's release of the Australian Industry Group-Pricewaterhouse Coopers Australian Performance of Manufacturing Index (PMI) again points to the Howard/Costello Government's economic complacency. Today's figures highlight the Howard/Costello Government's failure to move Australia to the next level of productivity improvements. It is an approach that is failing to keep Australian industry internationally competitive. Today's PMI shows just how bad the situation is getting for Australian manufacturing under the Howard Government's complacency, highlighting that overall Australian manufacturing production fell by 4.6 points in July on the PMI scale to 49.3. This is having a human cost as well - today's PMI indicating that employment in the manufacturing industry has declined during July, and is contracting overall. Today's PMI figures follow revelations by the Department of Industry in the May Senate Estimates that exports of Australia's elaborately transformed manufactured exports has gone backwards for the last three financial years. In Senate Estimates it was revealed that export growth of elaborately transformed manufactures had decreased in 2001-02 by 0.5 per cent, by a massive 7 per cent in 2002-03 and by a further 4 per cent in 2003-04.
