Australia has two distinct periods in her history ~ the time before European settlement in 1788, and the years since then. Our indigenous people, the Aborigines, were hunters and gatherers who roamed this country for 60 000 years before Captain James Cook landed in Botany Bay in 1770 and claimed the land for England. Our first European settlers were convicts transported from England on the "First Fleet" under the command of Captain Arthur Phillip in 1788. Discovery During the 15th century, European explorers began great sea journeys in search of new lands and new riches and there was a race to see who would be the first to discover the mysterious "Great South Land" which many were convinced had to exist so that the planet would stay balanced. Australian history: Towards a Marxist analysis
This website contains essays and articles on Australian history from a Marxist perspective.
Most have been written by Phil Griffiths, a PhD student at the Australian National University, Canberra, since 1999
and an activist in the International Socialist Organisation and the Refugee Action Committee. These articles and essays are offered as they were written, flaws and all, in the hope that they will be of interest to others trying to understand the development of capitalism in Australia. This website is incomplete; sometime soon I hope to add a short essay on what a Marxist history of Australia would need to address. I would love to get feedback: email me at phil.griffiths@optusnet.com.au Links to other historical, political and activist sites NEW: June 2003: Footsoldiers for capital: The influence of RSL racism on interwar industrial relations in Kalgoorlie and Broken Hill . This PhD thesis by Dr Sarah Gregson is a major contribution to the historical debate over racism and class in Australia. She sees the RSL as an elite-dominated, cross-class organisation with links to every section of society, and argues that the RSL was a significant agitator for migrant exclusion and white unity in the interwar period. In this context, labour movement responses to migrant labour incorporated a range of different strategies, from demands for racist exclusion to moves towards international solidarity.

Racism and class in Australian history
Work by Phil Griffiths, Canberra, Australia. Back to home page: Australian history: Towards a Marxist analysis (See also: Footsoldiers for capital: The influence of RSL racism on interwar industrial relations in Kalgoorlie and Broken Hill by Sarah Gregson) The White Australia policy was the foundation for Australian nationalism; and the Immigration Restriction Act was the first substantial piece of legislation debated and passed by the new Federal Parliament. Fear of China and then fear of Japan profoundly shaped Australian politics for most of the twentieth century. White Australia racism was a key element used by the ruling class and the right wing within the Labor party, in their battle against working class militancy and socialist politics. Since 1999 I have been working on a PhD on: White Australia: the ruling class agenda, 1875-1888 . I will progressively add articles and papers coming from this research to this website. The road to White Australia: Economics, politics and social control in the anti-Chinese laws of 1877-88

History Home American Civil War Lesson Plans American Presidents Lesson Plans Ancient China Lesson Plans ... World Religions Lesson Plans Please note that with regard to lesson plans dealing with anthropology, archaeology, indigenous people, ancient civilizations, history, etc, there may be some cross-over and blurring of lines between the topics. For example, a lesson plan dealing with archaeology is automatically dealing with an anthropological subject. A lesson plan dealing with indigenous people is also automatically dealing with anthropology and any of them may, or may not, be dealing with history or ancient civilizations. While every attempt will be made to keep the topic lines as 'clean' as possible, be aware this may not always be possible. Appropriate grade or age levels are included with the lesson plans. The number of lesson plans available online for this topic are too numerous for a single list. The following provides some idea of what is available and will hopefully be a good starting point. Please Note: If you sometimes get an error message when clicking on a large text link, don't give up. Try the URL link instead. There are times when the large text link doesn't "take" for some reason, thus the built-in redundancy. Thank you.
