Australia broke away from the massive Gwandanaland forming the world's first continent in the southern hemisphere. Chinese Australian History
The history of the Chinese in Australia is on show in the Central Equity Gallery on the third floor of the Museum. An exhibition highlighting the Museum's collection, accumulated over the past ten years is on show, with a wide variety of objects including old dragon and lion heads, traditional wedding costumes, shoes worn by women with bound feet, Cantonese opera banners and children's toys, currency, dolls and much more, depicting the life of Chinese immigrants over the past 150 years. A highlight of the exhibition is a display illustrating the achievements and activities of the Young Chinese League of Melbourne. The audio-visual theatre on the first floor houses a dynamic, multi-screen presentation of images and sounds - "Early Days", "Race Relations" and "Settlers". Here, too, are held public lectures and seminars on facets of Chinese -Australian history and culture. Finding Gold Cultural Classes Chinatown Heritage Walks

Agu, 1996 Bronze urns dug from the Victorian goldfields, a queue ("pigtail") cut off its wearer last century, and the debutante balls of the Young Chinese League from the 1930's evoke some of the richness of the Chinese contribution to Australia's history. A living part of Melbourne's modern Chinatown, the Chinese Museum was brought into being in 1985 to document, preserve and display the history of Australians of Chinese descent. An exiting range of changing exhibitions, audiovisual presentations, heritage tours and public seminars are some of the ways by which Australia's Chinese community shares its past, its culture, and its values with wide society, through the Museum.

"Australian history is almost always picturesque; indeed, it is also so curious and strange, that it is itself the chiefest novelty the country has to offer and so it pushes the other novelties into second and third place. It does not read like history, but like the most beautiful lies; and all of a fresh new sort, no mouldy old stale ones. It is full of surprises and adventures, the incongruities, and contradictions, and incredibilities; but they are all true, they all happened." These people were culturally distinct from all the 18th century Aborigines. Whereas 18th century Aboriginal paintings used geography and animals as their subject matter, the Bradshaw artists focussed on themselves. The broad-shouldered depictions of the Bradshaw humans seem reminiscent of Egyptian hieroglyphics. The slanted prolific features of the human face are reminiscent of Mayan pictures. Unlike traditional Aboriginal art which acted as a kind of encyclopaedia, it is not known what purpose the Bradshaw paintings served.

The Australiana section of the Monash Rare Book Collection allows researchers to approach more closely to the experience of our ancestors. We find there the accounts of the early discoverers, settlers and explorers. The conditions under which they lived and their response to Australia's native inhabitants can be understood much better if we read what they wrote. The gold rushes, the traveller's accounts, the preoccupations of our forebears, such as the affair of the Tichborne Claimant, all take on an added dimension when we are able to re-live them in detail through the study of the contemporary texts. We have on display most of the landmark Australiana volumes: Dampier's account, Captain Cook's three voyages, the First Fleet Journals, the key exploration accounts, as well as such natural history classics as Gould's
