Polls come, and polls go, and as the Prime Minister often says, the only poll that really counts is the one on election day. But if we looked at all the polls over a very long time, would they give us a better picture of what voters are really thinking?
Tim Grau, Founder of Springboard Australia, is interviewed by Radio National's Fran Kelly about the Newspoll results over the last 15 years. He found that there has been a seismic shift in voter attitudes about which side of politics is best able to handle core issues like health and education and the news for Labor is very bad.

New terrorism laws should adhere to human rights principles
13 September 2005 President of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission, John von Doussa QC, said today it is vitally important that the federal Government adheres to human rights principles when developing new counter-terrorism laws. Mr von Doussa said that pioneering States (including Australia) who drafted international human rights instruments like the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) envisaged that there would be occasions when some human rights principles set out in the covenant would be justifiably infringed by States in times of public emergency. In fact, a procedure for the derogation from certain fundamental rights was provided in Article 4 of the ICCPR which applies 'in times of public emergency which threatens the life of the nation' Voices of Australia

AUSTRALIAN POLITICAL INTERNET NEWS REVIEW
MEDICAL INDEMNITY CRISIS
The Howard government bears some responsibility for the failure of United Medical Protection.
The government has failed to properly regulate the insurance industry in Australia. There needs to be appropriately enforced standards on insurance companies to ensure that they maintain sufficient funds to cover any cash payments.
United Medical Protection, after HIH, is the second major Australian insurance company to collapse in a year.
The Howard government consistently avoids enacting and enforcing regulations on the corporate sector, despite the need for consumers and the public to be protected.
The Australian Prudential Regulatory Authority (APRA) is supposed to regulate the insurance industry in Australia. Despite its annual budget of over $50 million, the APRA does not appear doing its job properly. And who is the boss of APRA? The Howard government.
The Howard Government is beholden to the executives who run Australia’s large corporations. It has a pro-big business ideology, but it also receives large political donations from a lot of companies. In fact HIH, when it was operating, gave the Liberal Party over half a million dollars in donations. That is a conflict of interest. How can the Liberal Party, on the one had receive political donations from companies, and on the other hand regulate those same companies in the interest of the public?

Themes - National Centre for Crime and Justice Statistics
Crime and justice statistics provide measures of the levels and effects of criminal activity, as well as people's perceptions of their safety. These are issues that impact directly or indirectly on the quality of people's lives, and are seen as key indicators of, and contributors to, the wellbeing of society. They are of value to users in government involved in policy development and decision-making, the administrators and practitioners within the crime and justice sector, researchers and the community as a whole.
This theme page provides a guide to both ABS and non-ABS crime and justice data, with statistics and information available on aspects of crime and criminal justice. Included are links to further sources of information. Many of these links will take you to the Main Features or Media Releases of publications which you can view online, or follow further links to purchase additional information.
