NATIONAL SOLUTIONS PROJECTS
Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems
Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS) are likely to be a major contributor to achieving significantly improved OHS outcomes throughout Australian workplaces in the future. This project is about promoting the widespread adoption of systematic approaches to managing OHS.
Project guidance:
The project is guided by a Reference Group which comprises representatives from:
  • each state and territory OHS Regulatory Authority; the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, ACCI; the Australian Council of Trade Unions, ACTU; and the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations, DEWR.

Project aims:
  • Increase the understanding of the role and function of OHSMS
  • Encourage all Australian workplaces to adopt a systematic approach to managing OHS
  • Identify the essential elements of OHSMS
  • Identify how OHSMS are implemented in various industries, especially SMEs

The structure of the Australian Government may be examined in light of two distinct concepts, namely:
  • Federalism - Australia has both a federal government called the Commonwealth Government as well as state and local governments, and Separation of powers into legislative, executive and judiciary branches of government.
