Working paper presented at the ‘Institute of australian Geographers Conference, July, Canberra. 1999 Eastern Indonesia Transport and Spatial Integration in
http://www.wun.ac.uk/economicgeography/Bristol/partprofiles/williams.html
Research interests My research interests include gender, migration, and regional development. These interests follow a realisation after working on transport economics that places are linked in unequal ways and changes in transport connections favour only some locations and groups of people. My recent PhD research draws heavily on the analysis of movements of people based not only on census data but also on the documentation and analysis of indigenous lives of Eastern Indonesian women and their oral narratives. The contrast that these narratives provide to other representations of the more conventional economic approach requires a theoretical reconfiguration of our notions of place and identities, as Victoria Lawson suggested in her research on geographies of movement. I have sought to show how our understanding of contemporary migration requires us to pay attention not only to economic issues but also to a space of history and memory, and to show how this space is also open to contestation. I approach women migration as a re-positioning of self in the way Allan Pred (1990: 16-7) writes in his book, Making Histories and Constructing Human Geographies:
upon, as well, her varied positions in the network

Key Facts
Top of Page Australia is the sixth largest country in the world. Australia is an island, surrounded by water. It is located on the smallest continent in the world. Population: 17.5 million Geographic size: 2.97 million square miles Capital: Canberra Major cities and population: Brisbane, Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, and Adelaide.
Geographic Landmarks
Top of Page Australia has a very dramatic landscape. Australia is famous for its "outback," the remote lands of the interior. The desert outback covers most of the interior. It is too hot, dry and barren to support many people. Eastern Australia has large areas of grasslands, used primarily for sheep and cattle ranches. Australia also has some mountainous areas and plateaus scattered throughout the country. The Blue Mountains, on the south-eastern end of Australia, get their name from the blue haze caused by oil droplets given off from the eucalyptus trees.
