Geography quiz puts students on spot
    By Jennifer Buckingham, Schools editor
June 21, 2004 PORTUGAL lies on the western edge of what peninsula?
If you don't know the answer to this question, you would not have made a good candidate for the National Geography Competition championship round, held recently in Sydney. More than 81,500 students from 815 schools took part in the competition this year, but at Taronga Park Zoo on June7 there were only eight finalists, representing Australia's states and territories. The students, aged 13 to 15, were tested for more than an hour on stage in front of an audience of their teachers, peers and NSW Education Minister Andrew Refshauge. The questions involved maps, photos and film clips from the competition's sponsor, the National Geographic pay TV channel. Nerves played a large part.

26 Oct 04 - 21:24 this is great, a site from an australian crochet enthusiast... showing friends from the US just how big Australia is . it's a photo with the outline of australia shown superimposed over the us, and the relative placement of the cities. that's brilliant, because you just know, if this person is online and interacting in an international crochet scene, they probably meet up with um... notoriously uninformed folks from the states ... who might not be entirely sure just where Australia is, and how big it is. I sure hope they don't get the wrong idea about the location of Australia from this picture. *cough*
