ALL ACTIVITIES OF THE CENTRE FOR AUSTRALIAN CULTURAL STUDIES FOCUS ON THE VARIETIES OF CULTURE WE NOW HAVE IN AUSTRALIA The Centre for Australian Cultural Studies emphasises the importance of defining 'culture' as inclusively as possible. It insists on giving the issues of gender, science, law, the media, sport and the economy equal time wherever relevant, with the historically shaped myths of Anzac, the Land and the Frontier. The Centre is developing this web site to promote its activities, not only to university scholars but to the broader Australian public. We have something to offer all Australians - and especially to those interested in our country and its culture. Activities and projects encompass the diverse range of myths, images, practices, institutional patterns, social and personal relations, and private and public conventions that shape - and have shaped - Australia. The Centre for Australian Cultural Studies is presently developing a role in government policy-making - especially as this relates to the Federation centenary, the republican debate and neglected Australian cultural issues and individuals. About The Flag and The Aboriginal Flag

Australian Institutions and Official Links
... Weather in Australia
The Australian flag is composed of Union Jack and six white stars on a blue background. The Union Jack is a part of the flag due to the fact that Australia is a former British colony and is still a member of the Commonwealth. The five stars to the right are called "The Southern Cross" and represent a constellation of stars visible in the southern hemisphere. The last and biggest star is called the Federation Star. It represents the Federation of the Australian colonies in 1901.
There is also the Aboriginal flag. It was created in 1971. The black represents the Aboriginal people, the red the Earth and their spiritual relationship to the land, and the yellow the sun, the giver of life.

15 January 2003 Australian Government urged to take culture off the table
Cultural practitioners today called on the Federal Government to support Australian culture in its upcoming free trade negotiations with the USA. In a submission to the Department of Foreign Affairs Office for Trade Negotiations the Government was urged to negotiate a broad exemption for cultural industries, to allow it to continue supporting and fostering Australian cultural expression unfettered by the constraints of a trade agreement. The submission was made by the Australian Coalition for Cultural Diversity (ACCD), recently formed by Australia's leading cultural professional organisations to provide a single voice to Government on trade issues. ACCD membership reflects the spectrum of cultural industries, with representatives from music, film, television, book publishing, libraries, museums, dance, multimedia, and visual arts, and will be officially launched in February 2003. "We believe that pressure will be applied by the US in forthcoming negotiations to restrict Australia's freedom to act in support of its cultural policy objectives," said Dick Letts, Chair of the Music Council of Australia and spokesperson for ACCD.

Welcome to my Australian Flags page!
Australian Flag My Flag designs
This site contains the Australian flag, the Australian State and Territory flags, the Aboriginal flag, and the Torres Strait Islander flag. It also contains several flags which I have designed myself which could be possible replacements for the Australian flag. Over the last few years in Australia there has been quite a bit of debate concerning the Australian flag. Many people feel that the Australian flag should be changed to further represent our country. The main issue of concern is the Union Jack in the top left hand corner of our flag. Many people believe (myself included) that Australia is an independent country and therefore has no need for an ensign of another country's flag (the United Kingdom's) on our flag. I do like our present flag and am proud of the sacrifices and achievements made under the Australian flag, but I believe it is a new millennium and time for a change.
Here's the flags!

Agu, 1996 Bronze urns dug from the Victorian goldfields, a queue ("pigtail") cut off its wearer last century, and the debutante balls of the Young Chinese League from the 1930's evoke some of the richness of the Chinese contribution to Australia's history. A living part of Melbourne's modern Chinatown, the Chinese Museum was brought into being in 1985 to document, preserve and display the history of Australians of Chinese descent. An exiting range of changing exhibitions, audiovisual presentations, heritage tours and public seminars are some of the ways by which Australia's Chinese community shares its past, its culture, and its values with wide society, through the Museum.
