Travel Guide Powered by Linux Aborigines Didgeridoos Police ... Holden The rich mosaic of people make up the Australian nation of more than 19 million people. Australia was one of the main migration destinations of the second half of the 20th century: since 1945, immigration has almost doubled the Australian population. This influx has permanently altered the Australian character, and has contributed to the multicultural society of modern Australia. Most of the population of Australia is of European descent and Australian aborigines account for less than 1% of the total population. Before World War II more than 90% of the people were of British origin, but since then more than 5 million Europeans from the continent have migrated to Australia. In the 1970s tens of thousands of Southeast Asians were admitted to the country, mainly as refugees. So the make up today is as follows: Caucasian 92%, Asian 7%, aboriginal and other 1%. The country is heavily urbanised with less than 15% of the population living in rural areas. The vast majority lives in the ten largest cities, and the bulk of the population is located in the southeastern corner.

Everyday life - Icons of Australian culture
How does something become an icon? In Australia, potential icons need to pass a stringent screening process before they are regarded truly iconic. Not all of them make it (Vegemite flavoured cheese is a good example), some of them stick around for a while but don't have the staying power (Paul Hogan springs to mind). But others battle their way through the tough and sometimes fickle minds of the Australian population and emerge victorious, cementing themselves firmly in our hearts and proving themselves to be Great Aussie Icons. Below is a list of a few of these that have, over the years, become so greatly revered that just the mention of them brings a gentle smile of affection to the faces of even our gruffest countrymen. FA80 - 1 July 2003
I am pleased to announce that the Australia International Cultural Council (AICC) will present a major Australian cultural program Ancient Future in Japan this year in partnership with the Australia Council for the Arts. Ancient Future will highlight our cultural diversity, exhibiting contemporary and Indigenous works across a number of art forms including dance, music, theatre, film and visual arts. It will be held from July until December 2003. This is the next step in the AICC's strategy to promote a contemporary image of Australia internationally and the export of Australian cultural products. The festival will build on the already successful arts relationship between Australia and Japan. Australians have a long-standing, strong interest in Japanese artistic and cultural traditions. Many people in Japan are increasingly enjoying a wide range of Australian performing and visual arts, particularly contemporary and Indigenous arts. Ancient Future will develop a greater depth of knowledge and understanding of Australian arts, and pave the way for more opportunities for Australian artists in this key market.

For the most up-to-date information click on the Timetable link below. Credit 6 points Availability Semester 1 (See Timetable) The focus of this unit is on Australian culture in its historical and contemporary contexts, explored through a range of the most persistent and prominent myths and realities in national life. Is there such a thing as a 'typical Aussie'? Why is the society's national day built around the idea of a gallant defeat of Australian (ANZAC) armed forces on foreign land? Why is reconciliation with indigenous people such a pressing issue? What does it mean to call Australia a multicultural society? Is Australia a 'cultural desert' or the centre of substantial developments in the arts over recent decades? Are we really the 'lucky country'? And is Donald Horne correct in suggesting that sport is life to most Australians and the rest a shadow? Such questions are addressed in this unit.
The unit is multi-disciplinary in that its frameworks for analysing Australian culture derive from disciplines including anthropology, fine arts, history, literary studies and political science. It is an excellent introduction to current theories of cultural analysis as well as being highly informative about significant themes in the life of the Australian nation.

US-Australia trade deal threatens Australian culture, creativity and research
Australians should resist attempts to include our cultural heritage and to diminish our information access in the trade agreement currently being negotiated between Australia and the United States. If you think that this is rhetorical, Australian academics Peter Drahos and John Braithwaite (in their book Information feudalism: who owns the knowledge economy? and Global intellectual property rights: knowledge, access and development , co-edited by Drahos and Ruth Mayne) have charted, in documented detail, the success of powerful US corporate lobbying in multinational and regional trade deals since the 1980s. Countries have been persuaded to drop cultural protections and to accept intellectual property in return for promises of greater access to US markets. The promised market access is then diluted or opposed by a US Congress sensitive to local voters and lobbyists. One example of trade language is Colin Powells' article in the Wall Street Journal in 2001, in which he stated:

To be honest, I'm not sure what "Australian crafts" I've made will be the best for Australia Day (it's hard to truly get the flavour of a holiday from books). If any Australian viewers have thoughts on "best crafts" to recommend for the day, please let me know know and I'll make note of them on this page.
