Australia Day
and General Australia Crafts
As many of you know... I'm Canadian, not Australian. But I know how tough it can be to find stuff on "non-U.S. holidays" so I thought I'd try to put a few pages together for Australia Day. To be honest, I'm not sure what "Australian crafts" I've made will be the best for Australia Day (it's hard to truly get the flavour of a holiday from books). If any Australian viewers have thoughts on "best crafts" to recommend for the day, please let me know know and I'll make note of them on this page. Australian's have a national holiday called Australia Day every January 26th to remember their origins and celebrate their achievements. Click here to learn more about the origins of Australia Day.

About The Flag and The Aboriginal Flag

Australian Institutions and Official Links
... Weather in Australia
The Australian flag is composed of Union Jack and six white stars on a blue background. The Union Jack is a part of the flag due to the fact that Australia is a former British colony and is still a member of the Commonwealth. The five stars to the right are called "The Southern Cross" and represent a constellation of stars visible in the southern hemisphere. The last and biggest star is called the Federation Star. It represents the Federation of the Australian colonies in 1901.
There is also the Aboriginal flag. It was created in 1971. The black represents the Aboriginal people, the red the Earth and their spiritual relationship to the land, and the yellow the sun, the giver of life.

How to tell if you're Australian
by Chris O'Regan Here's the latest response to my E-Z home test for detecting Americans . Chris is a linguistics student at the University of Queensland, which is in Australia somewhere, and hails from Brisbane, which is in Australia somewhere. He says he enjoys ruminating on the Australian psyche and is interested in its speech characteristics. He was learning Verdurian for awhile, but otherwise seems sane.
Mark
If you're Australian...
  • You know hardly anything about the Constitution and what it actually contains. Before the whole republic thing, you may not have even known it existed.
  • You're familiar with Neighbours, Home and Away, Playschool, A Country Practice , Norman Gunston, Barry Humphries, Blue Heelers, Ray Martin, Bert Newton, Lisa McCune, Jon Burgess, Number 96, Molly Meldrum, Kerry O'Brien, and of course, Kerry Packer and Rupert Murdoch.
  • You can't remember past the second line of your national anthem, let alone the second verse . . .
  • Whether you're male or female, you watch a lot of sport. You watch the cricket, and support your footy team... which code is best is a matter of controversy and depends on your upbringing. You can be sure that the contest is between League, AFL, and maybe Union none of these fancy Northern Hemisphere games, like soccer or gridiron. If you're male, you can argue intricate points about their rules. You don't know so much about basketball, netball, hockey, baseball, etc. even if the national team are the world champions.
