Australia - A Great Nation This big island continent is one of the most beautiful in the world covering almost 7.7 million square kilometres. It spans several climatic zones from the tropics in the far north to the cool temperate conditions of the south. A population of 20.35 million inhabit a land area almost as big as continental USA. In their leisure time Australians enjoy an easy-going outdoor lifestyle. Suburban communities are dotted with swimming pools, backyard barbecues, parks, playing fields and tennis courts - and beaches are rarely far away. The houses in these neighbourhoods are of a high standard and relatively cheap compared with other nations. Wherever they choose to live, Australian families can find the right kind of community for their lifestyle, with comfortable living standards and excellent schools, hospitals, transport and other community services. Australian families have both the wealth and the time to enjoy their country. Working hours and the number of public holidays are similar to those in other Western countries. Australians are keen outdoor enthusiasts and virtually every activity is open to them. Many city-dwellers own holiday homes along the coast or in the mountains. The Snowy Mountains -within a few hours drive of Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra - offers international-class skiing.

Queensland welcomes people from interstate and overseas with ideas, skills and initiative to share a quality of life that ranks with the best in the world. A relaxed lifestyle, affordable homes and easy commuting make Queensland one of Australia's most attractive places to live and work.
With up-to-date technology and services, the lowest taxes in Australia and plenty of space to develop and expand, Queensland is the preferred location for many new businesses each year.
The people of Queensland enjoy an outdoor lifestyle with world class beaches and waterways, national parks, rainforests and tropical reefs. Our pleasant climate (average summer temperatures of 25 degrees Celsius, average winter temperatures of 15 degrees Celsius) means that Queenslanders enjoy more winter sunshine and warmth than most other Australian states.

Program for Term 3 1998
The theme in our classroom last Term was Australia. Within that, we looked at the geography of Australia, Aboriginal Culture The name of the theme is "Co-operating Communities" and it will begin with looking at particular places in our States and Territories. The students will then narrow their area of investigation to New South Wales and look at what each region has to offer. The students will then narrow their focus once more, to look at our local community . They will design surveys, send e-mails, and collect data on our local community. This will include looking at the people who live in our community, the changes that have occurred, what the local government in our community does and how our community is similar and different from another inner city and rural community. The lessons have been designed for maximum investigation by the students and have focused on the following skills:
  • Initiating investigations Identifying and gathering information Analysing and organising information Synthesising information using a range of media and tools to communicate Applying the information to new or different situations Planning and implementing action individually or in groups Reflecting on their learning

Speeches Peter Katz
High-resolution portrait
Author and consultant Peter Katz used to help developers market suburban sprawl. Now he's one of its fiercest critics. Katz is a leading proponent of New Urbanism, an urban design and planning movement that the New York Times called "the most important phenomenon to emerge in American architecture in the post-Cold War era." New Urbanists combine traditional planning and modern technology to create compelling places that break the suburban mold of mega-malls, cookie-cutter subdivisions and endless highways. Instead, they strive for environmental balance, social integration and a true sense of community. Katz played a key role in shaping the movement as founding executive director of the Congress for the New Urbanism, an organization that the New York Times called "the most important phenomenon to emerge in American architecture in the post-Cold War era." He's also author of a seminal book on the subject–The New Urbanism: Toward an Architecture of Community– published by McGraw-Hill in 1994. Katz received his degree from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York where he studied architecture and graphic design.
