Martin Williams
Professor
Room G44a, Mawson Building Phone Email martin.williams@adelaide.edu.au Professor Martin Williams is a world authority on climatic and environmental change at a variety of scales in space and time. He has carried out extensive fieldwork in Australia, Africa, India and China, and is author of over 200 research papers on Quaternary geology, geomorphology, climatic change and prehistoric environments in Africa, Australia and Asia (including 12 in Nature ). In May 1996 the University of Cambridge awarded him the degree of Doctor of Science (ScD) for his work on ‘geomorphology, soils and Quaternary environments in arid and semi-arid areas, with particular reference to North Africa, Australia and India'. The Royal Geographical Society had previously awarded him the Cuthbert Peek Medal for his work in the Sahara, the Sudan and Australia. His particular contribution is the reconstruction of prehistoric environments using evidence from a wide variety of disciplines, ranging from the environments occupied by early hominids in the Afar Rift of Ethiopia to Neolithic occupation sites in the Sahara and Nile valley and late Pleistocene wetlands in the arid Flinders Ranges of Australia.
Martin Williams is Foundation Professor of Environmental Studies and Affiliate Professor in Geology and geophysics. In the last ten years he has attracted over $1 475 000 in external research funds, including three large ARC grants, an ARC Linkage grant and a large NSF grant. In the last decade he has given over twenty invited plenary talks at international and national conferences and workshops. These included talks to the Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow, December 1999) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Beijing, July 1999).

    Australian Historical Studies
Australian Historical Studies is a refereed journal dealing with Australian, New Zealand and Pacific regional issues. First published in 1940, it is now one of Australia's oldest and best known academic journals, receiving contributions from leading academics in the field. The journal welcomes contributions bearing upon any aspect of the Australian past, including the recent past. We value reflective comment on the recreation of that past in the present, in all its forms - heritage and conservation, archaeology, visual display in museums and galleries, oral history, family history and histories of place as well more academic studies. Contributions on significant historical subjects of general interest to the readers and practitioners of Australian history are also welcome. Australian Historical Studies is published biannually by the University of Melbourne in April and October each year and is supported by the Faculty of Arts. It is also supported by the Faculties of Arts of Monash University, La Trobe University, Victoria University of Technology and the Faculty of Art, Design and Communication, RMIT. Articles, reviews, books for review and related correspondence should be sent to the Editor at the address below.
The Editorial Board gratefully acknowledges the generosity of its sponsors, Dr Anthea Hyslop and Mr Justice Mullaly. New sponsors (those making an annual donation to the journal of $200, which includes the year's subscription) would be most welcome.

Landscape Archaeology in West New Britain
    Dr. Robin Torrence
The aim of this long term archaeological research is to understand the history of settlement, subsistence, and trade in the Willaumez Peninsula beginning from earliest colonisation, ca 35,000 years ago up to the recent past.
Faces of the ancestors? This unique tatooed face depicted in 3 dimensions on a Lapita pottery sherd was recently found on Boduna Island, PNG
Layers into the remote past. Recent quarrying has revealed a series of interbedded soils bearing obsidian artefacts and layers of volcanic ash dating back into the Pleistocene period.
Excavations in progress at a deeply stratified site in West New Britain.
A layer cake of history. Obsidian tools and occasionally pottery are found in the dark layers (soils) which have been buried by volcanic ashes (light layers). This section dates back to about 6,000 years ago.
Rescue archaeology in action in West New Britain. Trenching reveals buried soils and artefacts
The inter-disciplinary project is directed by Dr. Robin Torrence from the Australian Museum. A large international team of specialists in geomorphology, palaeobotany, geology, and physics from universities in Australia, United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea as well as local and overseas volunteers are important collaborators. Funding has been obtained from the Australian Research Council, Earthwatch Institute, Papua New Guinea Biological Foundation, Australia and Pacific Foundation, AINSE, Australian Museum and New Britain Palm Oil Ltd. Initial work between 1992 - 1997 focused on Garua Island, but since 1999 the fieldwork has been centred on the southern end of the peninsula in a region dominated by recent development for oil palm plantations. An additional aim of the most recent work has been to identify sites impacted by development and where possible to rescue archaeological information.
