Australian Archaeology (ISSN 0312-2417) Introduction Australian Archaeology , the official publication of the Australian Archaeological Association Inc., is a refereed journal and has been published since 1974. The journal accepts original articles in all fields of archaeology and other subjects relevant to archaeological research and practice in Australia and nearby areas. Archaeology is defined broadly and covers the prehistoric and historic periods in terms of pure research and cultural resource management. Material stemming from work in environmental science, history, biological anthropology, social anthropology and other related areas is welcomed, particularly when it relates to current Australian archaeological problems and issues. As Australian Archaeology services the interests of Association members, thesis summaries, news clippings, cartoons and other material of interest to members are accepted, providing the necessary permissions have been obtained and/or acknowledgements are included.

TEXT BOOK Murray, T. (ed) 1998 Archaeology of Aboriginal Australia. Allen and Unwin. This book is a reader containing reproductions of many of the key articles on Australian archaeology. Added to this, the articles are introduced with descriptions of their historical context and influence. As such this volume serves rather like a brick, and you will find it extremely useful, although no replacement for extensive reading of course. Preliminary reading Lourandos, H.

Australian Archaeology in Profile Australian Archaeology in Profile: A Survey of Working Archaeologists 2005 THE DEADLINE FOR RETURN OF THIS SURVEY HAS NOW CLOSED Over 300 completed surveys were returned. Results are now being analysed and will be posted on this website as they become available. What is the purpose of this survey? This survey aims to build a basic profile of professional archaeology in Australia and to define key archaeology learning and training issues. The survey targets demographic, employment and professional activities data. Unlike the United Kingdom and the United States, there has been no comprehensive information of this type collected for the archaeological profession in Australia. This survey is being carried out under the auspices of the Australian Joint Interim Standing Committee on Archaeology Teaching and Learning (JISCATL) which includes representatives from Australian universities, professional associations, Indigenous groups, industry groups and public sector employers. The survey was designed as one response to a key recommendation of the 2003 Redfern Archaeology Teaching (RAT) Charter to better characterise the status of the archaeology sector in Australia through a "commitment to gathering reliable data for benchmarking of a variety of archaeological activities." These issues are important for improving archaeology teaching and learning outcomes and investigating the connections between graduate skills and those skills utilised in the workplace.
