Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. Night Skies of Aboriginal Australia By Dianne Johnson. Oceania Monograph 47. Price A$35 This is the broadest account of the Aboriginal night sky available so far. In her 'noctuary' Johnson makes a significant contribution towards defining Aboriginal astronomy as a field in its own right. In his book Yorro Yorro David Mowaljarli says that everything exists twice, once on the ground and once in the sky. This straightforward principle makes simple an understanding of Aboriginal astronomy for the cognoscenti but bewilderingly complex for the nonanthropological lay person. The challenge for those of us at the education interface is to know how to depict and explain Aboriginal constellations without simplifying things to the extent of dreamtime equals bedtime stories. Johnson's listing and explanation culled from the widest range of sources in the literature enables us to approach this important topic with dignity and with clarity.

What is Mythology?
Myths are generally stories based on tradition and legend designed to explain the universe, the world's creation, natural phenomena, and anything else for which no simple explanation presents itself. Not all myths need have this explicatory purpose, however. Likewise, most myths involve a supernatural force or deity , but many are simply legends and stories passed down orally from generation to generation. Mythology figures prominently in most religions , and most mythology is tied to at least one religion. Some use the words "myth" and "mythology" to portray the stories of one or more religions as false, or dubious at best. The term is most often used in this sense to describe religions founded by ancient societies, such as Roman mythology Greek mythology , and Norse mythology , which were nearly extinct at one time. However, it is important to keep in mind that while some view the Norse and Celtic pantheons as mere

by Dr. Philip A Clarke, South Australian Museum, Dep. of Anthropology, North Terrace, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia The study of ethnoastronomy offers greater insights into important ceremonial cycles and mythological beliefs of the Aboriginal people in Australia. Aboriginal seasonal patterns can only be understood when considered in relation to the movement of the cosmic entities observed in the skies. Aboriginal people were intensely interested in the Heavens and had considerable knowledge of it. Ethnoastronomical studies are able to contribute to the wider investigation of how notions of space are formed by culture.

From an African bestiary to universal science? Cluster analysis opens up a world-wide historical perspective on animal symbolism in divine attributes, divination sets, and in the naming of clans, constellations, zodiacs, and lunar mansions by Wim van Binsbergen homepage Part I Part II © 2002 Wim van Binsbergen
Abstract
Of course, more satisfactory cluster analyses, and a more sophisticated and subtle interpretation of their results, could be made if far more series from a wider range of provenances were included — particularly from other African and Asian societies, from the Americas, Australia and Oceania, ancient Europe, and from other spheres of life than religion, mythology, social nomenclature, and astral science. However, the preparation and analysis of our eleven series has already taken months of work. In the near future the data set will of course be greatly expanded in space and in time. Meanwhile, for a first indication of the kind of potential of this material and of this kind of analysis, the present exercise is quite sufficient. It confirms Levi-Strauss’ that animals have been bien a penser , ‘good for thinking’, in the most literal sense: as props for forms of untamed thought from which, ultimately, along an itinerary whose outline we are beginning to discern, contemporary scientific knowledge was to come forth.
