It is characterized by inappropriate degrees of inattention, impulsivity and/or hyperactivity. However, for children with ADHD, the persistence, pattern, and frequency of this behavior is much greater. These behaviors are the rule, not the exception. Performance variability is also common among children with ADHD. For instance, it is difficult for teachers to understand why a child can remember homework assignments on Monday and Tuesday but forget them on Wednesday.

It also can affect how people develop social relationships or self-esteem. Children with ADHD often are seen as unable to settle down impulsive, hyperactive, disruptive, and even aggressive in classroom and social settings. The medical community recognizes 3 basic forms of the disorder, as follows: Primarily inattentive: Inattentiveness to tasks or activities is the primary problem. Primarily hyperactive-impulsive: Impulsivity and inappropriate movement (fidgeting, inability to keep still) or restlessness are the primary problems. Combined: This is a combination of the inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive forms. The combined type is the most common. The predominantly inattentive type is being recognized more and more, especially in girls and in both sexes of adults. The predominantly hyperactive-impulsive type, without significant attention problems, is rare.

The exact cause or causes of ADD are not conclusively known. Scientific evidence suggests that in many cases the disorder is genetically transmitted and is caused by an imbalance or deficiency in certain chemicals that regulate the efficiency with which the brain controls behavior. A 1990 study at the National Institute of Mental Health correlated ADD with a series of metabolic abnormalities in the brain, providing further evidence that ADD is a neurobiological disorder. The Prevalence Of ADD In Adults The prevalence of ADD in adults is unknown; very few have been studied. In the few treatment studies of adults, there does not appear to be a significant sex difference. About two-thirds of the children who are diagnosed in or before elementary school with ADD continue to have behavioral symptoms in adolescence. During this time period, associated behavioral, learning, and emotional problems also manifest themselves. Approximately one-third to one-half of these adolescents continue to have symptoms of ADD during their adult years. The Diagnosis Of ADD In Adults A multifactored evaluation of an individual is important in the diagnosis of ADD. Diagnostic assessment of adults should be made by a clinician or a team of clinicians with expertise in the area of attentional dysfunction and related conditions.

Even as a preschooler, he would tear through the house like a tornado, shouting, roughhousing, and climbing the furniture. No toy or activity ever held his interest for more than a few minutes and he would often dart off without warning, seemingly unaware of the dangers of a busy street or a crowded mall. It was exhausting to parent Jack, but Lisa hadn't been too concerned back then. Boys will be boys, she figured. He'll grow out of it. But here he was, now 8, and still no easier to handle. Every day it was a struggle to get Jack to settle down long enough to complete even the simplest tasks, from chores to homework. When his teacher's comments about his inattention and disruptive behavior in class became too frequent to ignore, Lisa took Jack to the doctor, who recommended an evaluation for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). ADHD is a common behavioral disorder that affects an estimated 4% to 8% of school-age children. Boys are about three times more likely than girls to be diagnosed with it, though it's not yet understood why. Children with ADHD act without thinking, are hyperactive, and have trouble focusing. They may understand what's expected of them but have trouble following through because they can't sit still, pay attention, or attend to details. Of course, all children (especially younger ones) act this way at times, particularly when they're anxious or excited. But the difference with ADHD is that symptoms are present over a longer period of time and occur in different settings. They impair a child's ability to function socially, academically, and at home.
